D "Not really "ban" but "limitation". This sounds more suitable in this case. it is the natural phenomenon for the mononational states. And multinational, actually. Using the one language as official. To strengthen the statehood. Same thing with Ukraine. More separation from the "big brother". That is the point, I guess.

By the way, they strengthened much more after these 8 years. I think it is too late to start an invasion now than these 8 years ago back then in any case. 普通のメモやノート用として使う他、増田の言うようなちょっとしたアイデアとかはidea.mdにリストとか空行区切りで雑多に書いておいて、実現しようと思ったタイミングで新しいノート作ってリンクに置き換える感じ

I deeply admire your courage to keep it together as you parent. I’ve been there. I’m still there!

I’d like to raise a really sensitive issue. It might be a good idea to think through how your daughter will react to your scars as a tween or teenager. It’s great that you’ve decided to explain it to her. Secrets are never good. No doubt she will become a compassionate adult as a result. However she may need you to cover your scars as she gets older. Teenagers are hyper concerned about fitting in with their peers and she might feel embarrassed by them, not wanting to answer awkward questions.

My mother self harmed very badly. Her forearms were very scarred and I was self conscious about it. I would ask her to cover up, but she said she was ok with it and that I should be accepting and ‘get over it’.

I don’t want to be a downer,, or upset you, but I felt I ought to tell my story so that you might be able to navigate things when she gets to that age.

■天才が見たい 2/2

京都での大学生活がスタートした。当初の感想としては「ラーメンがうまい」、次に「車での移動は不適」。

大阪には意外とうまいラーメン屋がない。今は知らないが、当時の俺の生活圏ではそうだった。

京都の道路は本当に混んでいて、車で移動しようとすると骨が折れた。かと言って電車は電車でかゆいところに手が届いていないし、そもそも京阪電車以外で京都大学に行くのは大変なので、自然と自転車を活用する暮らしになった。

京都大学はよく、「1人の天才を作る為に、99人の廃人を作るところ」というような揶揄をされる。実際に通ってみると、半分は正解だが、もう半分はそうでもなかった。ただこれは俺が通っていたころの話なんで、今はどうなっているか分からない。

まず大前提だが、俺は他の大学を知らない。その上での結論だが、京都大学には「学生を育てよう」とかそういう気概はサラサラない。他の大学では学生を育成しようとしているかどうかの判断は俺にはつかないが、少なくとも京都大学工学部の教授連中はそういったことを放棄している。もうこれは誰が何と言おうと、厳然たる事実であると言い切ってしまいたい。小学校～高校までと大学とでは教育の質が違うというのは理解しているつもりだが、それを加味しても「放置されている感」は拭えなかった。講義の内容がスカスカとか、そんな事はまったくない。・・・まったくないのだが、BotWというよりはMinecraft、いやテラリアに近い感覚だった。チュートリアルと言うか、導きがほぼない。

だから前述の例え話は、「京大生が100人いれば、その中で輝ける天才となり得るのはせいぜい1人か2人」といった意味合いのほうが強いように思える。そもそもだが、「100人中1人だけが～」等とはいうものの、100人全員が京都大学に入れる程度の学力はある訳で、学力とか向上心とかそういったものはほとんど皆が持っている。

それを踏まえた上で、「そんな人間が100人いても（言い方は悪いが）全員が天才として輝ける訳ではない」のである。故に、そんな過酷な環境でも生き残れるような人だけが「天才」と称されることになるし、実際にそういう人だけが余人には到底及ばない領域に到達する事ができる。そんな環境が生んだ例え話なのだろう。

俺はなんとなく「99人のエネルギーを吸い取って1人に集めるのじゃ！」等とのたまうマッドサイエンティスト的なものを想像していたが、全然そんな事は無くて、天才と称されなかった99人も、一般の人から見れば大半がじゅうぶんに天才に見える。・・・多分俺も、世間一般から見れば「天才」とか「秀才」とか呼ばれているのだろう。俺自身そうは思っていないし、99人中95人ぐらいまでは同じ感想だろう。

ただ、多少余談ではあるが、99人とはいかなくとも、京大生が100人いると、7人～10人程度の「廃人」が何故か確実に発生する。

麻雀廃人、起業廃人、引きこもりなど、廃人の種類に差はあれど「一般人の枠をダメな方向に大きく踏み外してしまっている人」は、いつの時代でも何故か一定確率で発生してしまうようだ。このあたりは今後の研究を待ちたいところではある。

閑話休題。

そんな大学、俺が中学の頃から焦がれるように望んだ大学での授業は、控えめに言って最高だった。多分、俺の今までの人生の中で、一番光り輝いていた時間だったと、今でもそう思う。

大学に入るまで、俺は自分自身のことすら理解していなかった。

俺は「自分は天才になりたいから、京都大学に行きたいのだ」と、そう思って京都大学を目指していたのだと、そう思って生きてきた。京大に入れば、自分は天才になれる。天才である証明ができると、そうあれかしと願って入試を受けたのだと。

だが実際はそうではなかった。件の99人の廃人の例え話でいうと、俺は天才には到底なりえない側の人間であると、京都大学に入る遥か昔から理解していたはずなのだ。それなのに京都大学を目指した。もちろん天才のための供物になるつもりは毛頭ない。明らかに矛盾している。そんな単純な事にはじめて気付いたとき、俺は「血、かな・・・」と独りごちた後、ちょっと笑ってしまったのを、今でも覚えている。

大学に入って、年月を重ねて、半人前なりに様々な人生経験を得て、やっと結論に辿りついた。

俺は、天才が、見たい。

動機は分からない。自分がなりたかったもの、なれなかったものを見たいだけなのかも知れない。でも俺は、ありとあらゆる分野で、光り輝く天才たちの紡ぐ、まばゆいばかりの光を放つ功績を見たいし、もし叶うのであれば、己の眼前で、その天才の目撃者となりたい。

スポーツや将棋では、眼前の目撃者となれない。かけっこがいつもビリだった俺に、未だにハム将棋に勝てない俺に、そういった分野で生き残っていけるはずもない。自分がかろうじてでも食い下がれる分野で、その分野の天才の所業を、リアルタイムで見たいのだ。そう思った俺は、就活もGAFA的なところに絞った。この分野なら、まだ勝負できる。自分のフィールドがある。そう信じて、片っ端からESを送って面接しまくった。

就活はかなり苦戦したが、なんとかかんとかとある企業から内定をもらうことができた。今はそこで働いている。

勤続年数などは伏せるが、今現在の日々の業務は結構ハードだ。このご時世でも皆バリバリ働いでいるし、会社からは継続的に結果を出すことが求められている。それだけではなく、現状で満足することなく、より大きなプロジェクトを立ち上げたり回したりする事を求められる。

俺自身はハードな業務の中、ついていくのが精一杯といった感じではあるが、才能ある人間の成果物、仕事のやり方、会議で放たれる言葉。そういったものに直に触れながら毎日働いているのがとても面白い。

スーパーマリオなどを手がけた任天堂の宮本茂さんは

「アイディアとは、複数の問題を一度に解決できる事である」

と言ったそうだが、得心することしきりである。

俺は良く海外とのテレカンで「I have no idea（何も思いつかないよ）」と言ってしまうのだが、天才の出すアイディアと言うのは、まさに「just idea（思い付き）」のなせる業なんだなと感心しながら聞いている。そんな言葉をリアルタイムで聞けるのが、本当に嬉しい。

※ちなみに、京都の企業でもあるので、新卒当時は当然任天堂さんにもエントリーしましたが、見事玉砕しました。

なんかカッコいい、結論めいた事を書いて締めたかったけど、ふと思いついてダラダラ書き出した文章だからやっぱり締まらないな。天才じゃない人間のjast ideaなんて、そこはご勘弁願いたい。

言いたい事というか、伝えたいこととして何となく思い浮かんだのが「暗殺教室」って俺の好きな漫画。

この漫画内のセリフに「そもそも人に何かを教えたいと欲する時、大きく分ければ理由は2つしかない。つまり、自分の成功を伝えたい時か、自分の失敗を伝えたい時です。」ってのが出てくる。

一般的に見れば、今のところ、俺の人生はまあそこそこ成功しているように見えると思う。でもやっぱり俺自身は数多くの失敗を経験したと思っていて、失敗を経験したからこそ今までやってこれたのかな、と思ってる。だからもし、俺のこの文章の中に「伝えたいこと」があるとすれば、それは俺が京都大学に入ったとか、有名企業に入ったとかじゃなくて、「もっと早くから環境を作るべきだった」って事かな。

俺の人生の中の「うまくいかなかったこと」に対して、仕方がなかった、どうしようもない、そんな感じの慰めは今まで掃いて捨てるほど貰った。でも俺自身は、自分自身の努力によって、色々なんとかなったんじゃないかと思ってる。誰かが言っていたと思うけど、「後悔」っていうのは、ホントに脳に埋め込まれた時限爆弾だよ。そんなもん抱えて生きるぐらいなら、地雷原に突っ込んで爆発させたほうがマシだと思う。

あとは・・・親孝行はできるうちにしたほうが、いいんじゃないかな。

いくら命日に墓を磨いていても、泉下の両親が笑っている顔が、俺には思い浮かばないから。

I have noticed a rather superficial notion prevailing among half-informed foreigners, that because the common Japanese expression for one's wife is "my rustic wife" and the like, she is despised and held in little esteem. When it is told that such phrases as "my foolish father," "my swinish son," "my awkward self," etc., are in current use, is not the answer clear enough?

To me it seems that our idea of marital union goes in some ways further than the so-called Christian. "Man and woman shall be one flesh." The individualism of the Anglo-Saxon cannot let go of the idea that husband and wife are two persons;—hence when they disagree, their separate rights are recognized, and when they agree, they exhaust their vocabulary in all sorts of silly pet-names and—nonsensical blandishments. It sounds highly irrational to our ears, when a husband or wife speaks to a third party of his other half—better or worse—as being lovely, bright, kind, and what not. Is it good taste to speak of one's self as "my bright self," "my lovely disposition," and so forth? We think praising one's own wife or one's own husband is praising a part of one's own self, and self-praise is regarded, to say the least, as bad taste among us,—and I hope, among Christian nations too! I have diverged at some length because the polite debasement of one's consort was a usage most in vogue among the samurai.

なお『武士道』の初版は1899年。「戦後あたりから間違った意味で使われるようになった」というおまえの説と矛盾する。新渡戸稲造によるとWe think praising one's own wife or one's own husband is praising a part of one's own self（おのれの妻や夫を褒めるのはおのれ自身の一部を褒めることだと、我々は考える）というのだ。だからmy rustic wife（愚妻）のような表現を使うのだ、と新渡戸は言っている。したがって─

高島俊男さんの「お言葉ですが…２」では、「愚」はわたしの意味だと説明した上で、実はこのような一人称二人称という発想は西洋人の発想だとことわり、日本人の発想は、「こちら側」と「あちら側」に分けるのだという。

これも「こちら側」にいる私と妻をまとめて「愚」と呼んでいる、と読むのが正確だろう。

もっとも、高島説でも新渡戸説でも「どうして自分の師匠を『愚師』とは呼ばないのか」という問題は説明がつかない。門弟から見れば師匠は「こちら側」だ。

関係ないけど、イギリスに行った時、ヒースロー・エクスプレスに乗ったん。

んで着いた時切符を探すと見つからなくて、失くしちゃったみたいで。

うーん困ったなあ、と近くにいたメガネかけた白髪の、絵に描いたようなイギリス人のおじさん駅員に、

拙い英語で「切符失くしちゃったんですけど、どうすればいいですか？」って聞いたん。もちろん切符代は払うつもりで。

そうしたら、ちょっと怪しむ態度を見せたけど、面倒なのか「いいよいいよ、そのまま行っても」って厄介払いされたん。

後で考えたんだけど、それが無賃乗車の手口かもしれないからか。

行っていいのかなー、ととぼとぼ歩いて上着のポケットから切符を発見。

踵を返して小走りで駅員のところまで戻り「切符ありました！」って言ったら、

すごい笑顔で「お前は悪いことをするような奴じゃないって、最初から分かってたよ」って言われたん。

映画の台詞みたいな言い回しで嬉しかったけど、「kid」って言われたように聞こえて、

そのとき35歳だったん。日本人は若く幼く見えるし、日本人は世界中で日本人扱いされる。

だけど初めて行ったアメリカだと、モーテルから出て立ってたら、やって来たベビーカー押す白人ママに道を聞かれた。

「I'm traveler. tripper. I'm not local person. I have no idea of here」とか言い続けても、

「はぁん？」みたいに言われて、「おけいけ」みたいに言われた。見かけじゃ日本人だって分からないものね。

12 Dr. Hiroshi Nishiura is one of the few professionals of mathematical models of infectious diseases in Japan, and it is well known that his ability is outstanding. However, many people don't understand mathematical models themselves (I must confess that I can't say that I understand all of the findings because I'm not a professional of mathematical models either), so his findings and comments are easily deified. Because the contents of the mathematical model are a complete black box to many people, it makes it seem like the oracle is coming out like a shrine's oracle. Much of Japan's infection control policy relies on the Nishiura theory. So there is nothing wrong with that, but one of the problems in Japan is that there is no plan B in case plan A goes bust. Dr. Nishiura is an excellent scholar. It is not God. Hence the need to have that Plan B with the possibility of making a mistake. I am greatly concerned that bureaucrats and politicians who are prone to infallibilism will mistake science for an oracle. It is only when falsifiability is assured that science can continue to be scientific.

It's a common occurrence in this industry that no matter how deducibly correct it may seem, it's actually not true. Even a huge intellect like Hegel or Marx can make a mistake by deduction alone.

14 モデルを使うな、といっているのでは決してない。ぼく自身、モデルを用いて論文を書く。しかし、モデルは無謬ではなく、そこには前提である仮定があり、仮定はしばしば間違っている。グラム染色を活用するとは、グラム染色にできないこと、分からないことを知悉していることであり、グラム染色万能論者にグラム染色は使えない。同じことだ。英国でも数理モデルは活用されているが、だからこそ英国人はその結語には非常に懐疑的で、常に反論、異論が起きている。健全で科学的な態度である。

　I'm not saying don't use the model at all. I myself write a paper using a model. However, the model is not infallible, there are assumptions that are assumptions, and the assumptions are often wrong. Making use of Gram's stain means having full knowledge of what Gram's stain cannot do and does not understand, and Gram's stain cannot be used by Gram's stain universalists. It's the same thing. Mathematical models are also utilized in the UK, which is why Brits are very sceptical of their conclusions, and there are always counter-arguments and objections. It is a sound and scientific attitude.

感想：「前提たる仮定」がうまく訳せていなかったので「前提である仮定」にしたが、assumptions that are assumptionsになってしまった。

「英国人は」がないと主語がIになってしまったので追加した。しかしBritsじゃ意味違うよ。もっと正しく訳してくれない？

15 Japan's "now" is a well-controlled state of infection, which is much better than Wuhan at its worst, or Italy, Spain, France, England, or New York at the present time. The problem is that it doesn't guarantee that it will "always work".

感想：特にない。便利だなあ。

It is Tokyo that is of concern. The increase in reports of infection is not the only problem. The problem is that more and more infected people are unable to form clusters and cannot be traced. And the number of tests is much lower than that number of positive cases; it's too little that they only tested less than 100 people (the date of testing for the positives is unknown, but it's probably around here) to capture 47 infected people.

Again, it's not necessary to figure out all the infected people. However, it is troubling that the flow of infection, movement and clusters are out of sight. Therefore, the threshold for testing must be lowered in Tokyo. The threshold for testing varies with the circumstances. That's what I explained with the Korean example. Sticking to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's "standards" will lead to a misunderstanding of the phenomenon itself. Already in the Kansai region, infected people have been found with taste and smell abnormalities, and clusters have been detected from there. I would like to make more use of the athletic sensibilities of these clinicians. I'm not sure "where" in Tokyo is the barrier to lowering the number of inspections, but that barrier needs to be removed immediately.

We need to keep our eyes on reality so that "peak shouldn't happen" doesn't become "I don't want to see a peak. Even if it is an inconvenient truth that we don't want to see.
