■スパルタ人はわざと重い鉄貨を使ったのか？

友達が最近藤村シシンさんがFGOをギリシャ史と絡めて解説する動画にハマったらしい。ヲタトークをしていたらシシンさんの動画が面白かったという話をしていて、それはいいんだけど、「古代スパルタだとお金をわざと重くして人々が堕落しないようにしてたんだって！」と楽しそうに語りだしたので「そんなことある？？？」と思ってしまった。古代ギリシャ史については素人だけど、流石にちょっと胡散臭くないか？

ということで調べてみました！

まあトーク番組だから出典をいちいち挙げないのは当然として、じゃあ何がソースなんだろうと思ってちょっと検索してみたら、元ネタはプルタルコスの『英雄伝』なのね……『英雄伝』はギリシャ・ローマの英雄たちの逸話を紹介してる本で、日本語訳も複数出てるけど、増田は素人だから手元になくて近所の図書館にもなさそうなので、ネットで英訳版を見てみることにする。具体的にはリュクールゴスの章に書かれているらしい。

なるほど、シシンさんのトークはプルタルコスの記述に忠実だ。少なくとも彼女は盛って話していたわけではない。

で、プルタルコスの『英雄伝』が書かれたのは後2世紀初頭と言われているんだけど、ここで逸話が語られているリュクールゴスはだいたい前9世紀頃に活躍した人物と言われているのね。彼はスパルタの半ば伝説的な立法者。要するにプルタルコスは直接スパルタで鉄貨を見たんじゃなくて「1000年くらい前のスパルタではそういうことがあったらしいよ」っていう伝承を語っているのよ。古事記かな？

ところで根本的に、古代ギリシャでは鉄の棒を通貨として使っていた地域があったらしいんだよね。「わざと鉄の棒を通貨として採用した」んじゃなくて「もともと鉄の棒をお金として使ってた」だと、かなりイメージ変わってこない？

ちょっと古い文献だけど，Charles Seltmanっていう貨幣の専門家が書いたA Book of Greek Coinsっていう本にも次のようなくだりがある。

なんでかというと、スパルタがあったラコニア地方は単純に鉄が採れる地域なんだってさ。そら、鉄が採掘できるなら鉄貨使うわな。

Iron was mined in Laconian territory, in the southern spurs of Taygetus and Parnon which end in Capes Taenarum and Malea. It was, therefore, but natural that the Spartans, with the wealth at their disposal, should employ bar-iron as currency; and their conservat ism, combined with their lack of any more precious metal, led them to continue the employment of iron money for four centuries after other Greek states had adopted coin（33頁）

さらにこうも書かれている。

要するに、

スパルタ人が鉄の棒を通貨として使ってたのは事実
でもスパルタ以外の都市でも使ってた（なぜなら鉄の産地だから）
実用的な通貨だった可能性がある
わざと重くした、って書いてあるのはあくまで数百年後に書かれた文献での話

ってことね。

「質実剛健さを重んじてわざとコインを使わなかった」のが仮に史実だとしても、「あえて鉄の棒を採用した」んじゃなくて「鉄の棒を使い続けた（＝コインを採用しなかった）」というのが本当のところなんだろうなぁ。

あと，「偉い人の論文読んでみたら、普通にスパルタでは外国の通貨使ってたらしいよ」というブログ記事も見つけた。ただ元の論文がなかなか見つけられないので確定的なことは言えないけれど……

このエピソード、英語で色々ググってみたけど全部出典がプルタルコスに行き着くので、考古学的裏付けはあまりないっぽいんだよね。まあプルタルコスはおもしろネタが満載なわけだけど、そこしか出典がないとなると結構胡散臭いんじゃないかな。

もちろん増田は古典ギリシャ語とか読めない素人だから、実際には他のところにも記述があったり、考古学的証拠が見つかっていたり、リュクールゴス時代の古文書が発掘されている可能性もあるわけだけど、個人的にはシシンさんのスパルタの鉄貨に関するトークを信じる気にはなれないかなと思いました。

この記事に鉄の串の写真があって、シシンさんが解説を寄せている。解説の文面はまあ納得のいく見解なので（串がコインに先立つことや、コイン出現後もスパルタでは串が使われていたと書いている。そこに異論はない）、動画でのトークはネタに振り切った感じなんだろうか……

FGO ファン向けなら史実かどうかは怪しいおもしろエピソードを史実かのように話していい…ってコト!?　ワ…ワァ…FGO ファンにもシシンさんにも失礼すぎて泣いちゃった！

様々な論点があるので100字に入りきらないが，スパルタは貴金属貨幣を禁止していたということと，リュクルゴス制の成立を前９世紀とするのは後世による「伝統の創造」であるこことは指摘したい。

書き方が悪かったかもしれませんが、鉄貨の存在や貴金属貨幣の禁止は否定していません。

動画では、シシンさんは「スパルタはお金をどんどん重くしていって、賄賂や贅沢を抑止していた脳筋国家である（少しでも金額が大きくなると持ちきれないほどの重さになるから袖の下は渡せないし、持つことで鍛えられるから）」と言っています。

これ、前提知識なしで聞くと「バーベルのような鉄貨は堕落を嫌ったスパルタの発明」と聞こえるんですよ。実際に増田にこの話を面白そうに話した友人もそう理解していましたし、増田もトークを聞いてそう理解しました。そして実際にプルタルコスはそう書いています。

でも実際には、単にコインの発明前からスパルタやその周辺地域には棒状の貨幣があって、スパルタはそれをコインに置き換えなかった、という話なんですよね。で、参考文献に挙げた本にも「マッチョイズムじゃなくて経済的だから使ってたんじゃない？」と書いてある（最後に引用したセンテンス）。これ絶妙に史実を勘違いさせるトークになってません？　って思っちゃうんですが、どうでしょう。

（もちろん、副次的効果として賄賂の抑止や筋力増強はあったかもしれませんが、それが主目的であるかのように論じられると……都会民は電車通勤ゆえに自家用車通勤の地方民より体力があったりしますが、都民の体力を増強させるために都はメトロを整備したんだ、と言い出したら違う話になるでしょう？）

リュクールゴスが実在の人物であるかのような筆致はご指摘のように不用意でした。

Someone who believes everything they hear on TV and other mainstream media, yet chooses to ignore official CDC numbers, such as how Covid has a 99.9997% recovery rate for those under 30, and 99.92% recovery rate for those 70+. They also ignore the fa ct that health "experts" on TV have told us that hospitals mark just about any death as a Covid death, no matter how they died, simply because they tested positive for Covid or were merely suspected of such.

Thus, these people wear their masks everywhere they go like it's a status symbol, while believing it actually does any good.

■No More Dヲタ界隈の暗黙ルールの強要！

　批判覚悟で書き込みます。

　シンデレラ城前等映えるスポットに居座ってTikTokやインスタの撮影をしている子達と、一番ベストなポジションでショーパレを楽しむために何時間も前からショー、パレードルートで地蔵している人達に違いはありますか？

どちらも景観を損ね、通行の邪魔になっているという意味では大して変わらない気がします。

正直前者はオタクが単に自分達の中で決めた暗黙のルールを破っているから排除対象として非難されているようにしか見えません。

　トゥーンタウンの木箱やアラビアンコーストの窓枠、シンデレラ城の階段の手すり、アクアスフィアの石枠等確かに高い場所に登って写真撮影を行うことは危険だと思うし、注意が必要だったかもしれないです。けど、それはネットで総叩きして個人情報を晒されるという制裁を加えられなければいけないほどのことでしたか？キャストに一言「あの子たち危険な行為をしていませんか？」と伝えれば、それがもしトラブルにつながるのであればキャストがゲストに直接注意して終わる話ではなかったのでしょうか。

あの一件10割インスタ映えの子達が悪かったが世論でしたが、正直トゥーンタウンの木箱の周りに植栽が置かれたり、アラビアンコーストの窓枠が埋められたり、アクアスフィアの柵が増設されたりしたのも、ゲストを危険から遠ざけることだけを目的に設置されたんじゃないと思います。これ以上OLCが介入できないようなゲスト間トラブルを避けるための対策という意味合いもあったのではないでしょうか。

　一部のDヲタはよくよく自分の行動を振り返ってみてほしいです。やりすぎていませんか？

　一部のDヲタの「気に食わない。」という憎悪の私情一心での度の過ぎた注意喚起、本当によくないと思います。皆んなTDRでの楽しみ方の価値観が違うだけなんだということを知ってほしいです。

私はTDRがDヲタだけが居心地の良いDヲタのためのパークになって欲しくありません。TDRは魔法とイマジネーションの世界に包まれて、時には誰かの夢が叶う素敵な場所であってほしいです。

■ゼレンスキー 大統領の国会 演説、広島 長崎がキーワードになる？

23日、ゼレンスキー大統領が日本の国会で演説を行う。

日本で演説を行う意味は2つあるだろう。

ひとつは言うまでもなく、日本、そして日本人に向けてのメッセージ。

ウクライナにおける戦争は決して日本に住む人々にとって無関係なものではなく、すぐ隣にある戦争であり、ここで日本がしっかり発信しないと厄災は日本にも襲いかかる。

もうひとつは世界に向けてのメッセージ、こちらは日本から発信する意味を考えてのものになる。

ゼレンスキー大統領がいま一番訴えたいことは第3次世界大戦の恐怖、そしてその前線で戦っているウクライナへの連帯だろう。

第3次世界大戦の恐怖とはなんだろう。

いまウクライナが受けている残虐非道が世界中に広がるのももちろんあるが、なんといっても核戦争だろう。

唯一の被爆国である日本で、広島・長崎が受けた惨劇を訴えれば、日本はもとより世界がその悲惨さを思い出すだろう。

そしてもし、いま核戦争が起これば、その被害は広島・長崎の例ではなく、世界の主要都市に壊滅的な被害を引き起こす事に思いが及ぶだろう。

その原爆を落としたのは、アメリカだ。

ゼレンスキー大統領のアメリカでの演説では、真珠湾攻撃が引き合いに出された。

これはもちろん、アメリカ人の心に訴えたものだが、先に”Remember Pearl Harbor”を出す事で、後の”No more Hiroshima、No more Nagasaki”を出しやすくする意図もあったのではないか。

日本では真珠湾攻撃にショックを受ける人が多かったが、広島・長崎への原爆投下への言及はアメリカ人にとって、もっとショックが大きい。

先に”Remember Pearl Harbor”があれば、多少なりとも緩和する効果があるだろう。

またこれは、（日本とアメリカにとっての）第2次世界大戦の最初と最後でもある。

さしずめ、”Remember Pearl Harbor”はウクライナが受けた理不尽な攻撃、”No more Hiroshima、No more Nagasaki”はこれから世界が受ける惨劇と言ったら、言い過ぎだろうか。

核の話で言えば、原発の問題もある。

福島は、津波で電源を失った。

ザポロジエでは、ロシア軍の攻撃で電源喪失の危機に陥った。

核の恐怖を語るうえで、フクシマも引き合いに出されるかもしれない。

ヒロシマ、ナガサキ、フクシマ……これは実際に日本が受けた厄災であり軽々と発信していい事ではなく、もし演説の中で取り上げられるとしても、どう取り上げられるか不安はある。

また、ゼレンスキー大統領が実際に日本の国会で核の話をするとは限らない。

それでも、世界に発信する場を提供する事は、日本が世界に向けてできる事であり、大袈裟ではなく日本の責務だと思うし、国会がその責を果たそうとする事に賛辞を送りたいと思う。
