My few interactions with Jeffrey Epstein came at the request of Joi Ito, for the purposes of fundraising for the MIT Media Lab. Prior to these interactions, I was told by Joi that Epstein had cleared the MIT vetting process, which was the basis for my participation. My last interaction with Epstein was in 2015. Still, by agreeing to participate in any fundraising activity where Epstein was present, I helped to repair his reputation and perpetuate injustice. For this, I am deeply regretful.

Joi sought the gifts for general research purposes, such as supporting lab scientists and buying equipment. Because the members of my team involved believed it was important that Epstein not use gifts to MIT for publicity or to enhance his own reputation, they asked Joi to agree to make clear to Epstein that he could not put his name on them publicly. まだ、対モビルスーツ戦闘という概念が定本化されているわけでもなかった当時においては、パイロットの試行錯誤の過程がそこには残っていた。
この試行錯誤の過程こそが、戦闘という何が起こるかわからない場における解答を導き出すために必要な肯定であった。
彼は、その一年戦争当時の学習型コンピューターの記録を元に、モビルスーツの運用をサポートする擬似人格コンピューターを開発し、ガンダムF90に搭載されることとなる。
しかし、この疑似人格コンピューターは、当時のエースパイロットをベースにしていたこともあり、コンピューターがはじき出した結論を実際のパイロットには理解できないケースもままあった。
もちろん、そのAIの意見を完全に信用し任せられるようなパイロットにとっては、疑似人格コンピューターはとてもよいパートナーになるのだろうが、まだそのような人材は稀であった。
そのため、次の疑似人格コンピューターとして着目したのが、一年戦争当時のエースパイロットではないパイロットであり、かつ多くの戦闘を経ているパイロットであった。
そこで発見したのが、かのアムロレイと共にホワイトベース隊で活躍したガンキャノンの学習型コンピューターの記録だった。
このガンキャノンは、当時多くのパイロットが代わる代わる乗っていたこともあり、そのクセもそれぞれであったが、アムロレイと比較すれば良い意味で人間的な選択肢を提示する擬似人格コンピューターを作ることができた。
そんな、「Type-Anonymous」を搭載したガンダムF90・4号機はコスモ・バビロニア建国戦争で運用されていた機体。
フロンティアIVでのラフレシアとの戦いで、ヘビーガン、ダギ・イルス、ビギナ・ギナが大破したこにより、スペースアークが保有するMSはF91一機となっていた。
そのF91のパイロットであったシーブックアノー、その母親であるモニカアノーがサナリィの開発部門に所属していた縁があったためか、軍を介さずサナリィから直接的に授与されたMSがこの、F90・4号機となる。
当初は、MSパイロットでもあったベラロナが搭乗する予定だったが、彼女はその銘を利用した活動を中心としてたため、固有のパイロットはおかれずスペースアークの要員が代わる代わる運用していたようだ。
その癖のなさは、本業のパイロット以外も登場するケースがままあったホワイトアークでは重宝され、コスモ・バビロニア建国戦争末期まで活躍することとなった。
なお、この擬似人格コンピューターそのもののコスト自体が重かったこともあいまり、次期量産機には搭載されることはなかった。
ハット・ボー氏はその後、サイド3（当時もうジオンは共和国の自治権放棄をしており連邦の一部であった）で、AIに関する業務に携わることになる。
彼の作成した擬似人格コンピューターは、より高度な対話を成せるような優れたものになるだけでなく、そのAIの提案する選択肢を躊躇なく選ぶことができるデバイス・ツールの使い方がめっぽう上手いパイロットが増えた時にはより評価されることになるだろう。
また、余談ではあるが、「Type-Anonymous」のベースとなったホワイトベース隊のガンキャノンに搭乗していたジョブ・ジョン氏は現在まさにそのサナリィの上層部に名前を連ねており「カイよりは俺の方が上手に乗ってた」と言ったとか言わなかったとか……

「文系の学問における注と参考文献の話、補遺」（anond:20190511125053）への反応見ていて、ブコメだけじゃなくtwitterでも「author-date方式でいいじゃん」という声がたくさんあり、やっぱり伝わりにくいものなんだなぁと思いました。
author-date方式、私もそれで論文書いたことあります。とても便利なやり方です。引用するのが学術論文や書籍だけなら。
ところで、次のような文献はどうやってauthor-date方式で引用すべきでしょうか（手持ちの英語文献から引っ張ってきた例です）。

最初のアルファベット数文字は公文書館の略号、それに続いているのは公文書館に所蔵されている史料（つまり公文書）の整理番号です。

もちろん、工夫すれば上で挙げたような文献もauthor-date方式で引用できます。できるんですが、簡便で伝統的な書き方があるのにわざわざ不向きなauthor-date方式を使わなきゃいけない理由がわからない。
なのでまあ、何が言いたいかというと、
……という感じですかね。author-date方式は便利だから先行研究の整理とかするときには愛用してるけど上で挙げたようなやつまでauthor-dateで書けとか言われたら「ああん？」ってなります。
author-date方式って大嫌い。(シェイクスピア2019)とか(アリストテレス2018)みたいな意味不明の注ができるし、ページ数が書いてなかったりするし、あと私は年号がない文献も使うから。

で、私はauthor-date方式はどちらかといえば好きなんですが、さえぼー先生が「大嫌い」とおっしゃるのもわかります。
好きじゃないなら単に使わなければいいのに何で「大嫌い」って思うかといえば、頓珍漢な推測だったら申し訳ないんですけど、「author-dateを使うべきだ！ author-dateじゃないとおかしい！」って押し付けてくる他分野の人がウザいというのが理由として大きいと思うんですよね。
私もとある機会に全部author-dateで書け、注で出典表示するのはいっさい認められん、と言われて、ふざけんなこんなのどうやってauthor-dateで引用するんだよと食って掛かったことがあります。もうほんとね、他分野の人がどんな資料を引用してるのかについて想像力を持ってほしいですわ。
というか人文系の人が理系や社会科学系の人がauthor-date方式使ってるのに文句を言っている場面はまず見ないのに対して、人文系の引用方式に文句をつける理系や社会科学系の人をそれなりに見かけるのはいったい何なの？ って思います（あ、でも、『史学雑誌』の書評でauthor-dateに文句つけられてるのは見たことあるかも）。このへんの憤懣があるんですよね。

投稿可能文字数は感覚として染み付いていたし、十分に注意もしていたはずだった。だがそれでも、死神のワイヤーの速度に煽られる形で、つい記事の一つが一線を超えてしまった。
もちろん、短縮や分割をした上で投稿し直すことは可能であり、取り返しのつかないミスではない。だがどのみち、今のような記事のままでは黒帽子を退けるイメージが〝増田〟にはどうしても湧いてこなかった。一瞬とはいえ立ち止まったことで、その現状を自覚してしまったのだ。
手の止まった〝増田〟を前に黒帽子は、今度こそ必殺の一撃を放とうとでもいうのか、妙にゆったりとした動きでワイヤーを構える。
「……………………！」
迫りくる「死」を前にして、これまで匿名ダイアリーという修羅の空間を支配してきた圧倒的な異能が、限界を超えて稼働する。
「！」
打鍵音がひとつながりに聞こえるほどの神速で記事を執筆し、投稿した。
『口笛を吹いて現れる黒帽子の死神だけど、笑顔の素敵なJKを飛び降り自殺に追い込んだ時の思い出を語るよ』
投稿するやいなや、凄まじい大炎上が巻き起こった。100、200、300、500……みるみるうちに1000ブクマの大台を超えて炎上、すなわちバズは拡大し続けている。
それは、たとえどんな「設定」であれ強固に定着させるのに申し分ないほど巨大な「承認」だった。
「――というわけさ。こんな形で浮かび上がることになるとは、僕も思っていなかったがね」
澄んだボーイソプラノが〝増田〟、いや、「黒帽子の〝増田〟」の口からこぼれる。
「ほう？」
一応は声を上げたものの、黒帽子はこの特異な状況――自分と寸分たがわぬ姿をした〝増田〟を前にしても、ほとんど驚いた様子がなかった。
だが、これで少なくとも戦闘力に関しては互角のはずだ。仮に相討ちになったところで、〝増田〟の方は「設定」が消えるだけ。〝増田〟は勝利を確信した。
「それで君は――『僕』は、どうするのかな？」
そこで黒帽子は、なんとも奇妙な顔つきをしてみせた。笑っているような泣いているような、左右非対称の表情だった。
〝増田〟は、いつの間にか自分の顔も、鏡写しのように同じ表情を浮かべているのを感じた。
〝増田〟の意思とは無関係に口から言葉が吐き出される。そして、黒帽子の〝増田〟の右手が持ち上がり、肩の上あたりで止まった。

「仕上げはよろしく頼むよ、『僕』」
そう言うと黒帽子の〝増田〟は、さよならをするように右手を軽く振った。その直後、耳元で空気を切る音がしたかと思うと、

ワイヤーが〝増田〟の首にしっかりと絡んでいた。しかも、そのワイヤーは目の前の黒帽子ではなく、〝増田〟であるはずの黒帽子自身の右手から伸びているものだった。
なぜこんなことにと考える暇も与えず、ワイヤーは〝増田〟の首の皮を、肉を、骨を切り裂き、黒帽子自身の「設定」を破壊した。
「……！？」
黒帽子の「設定」を失い混乱する〝増田〟の首に、今度は前から飛んできたワイヤーが巻き付いた。遂に「本体」を捉えられた今、もはや〝増田〟に逃げ場はない。
黒帽子のワイヤーは、これまでのように一気に切断することはせず、しかし着実に〝増田〟本体の首をギリギリと締め付けていく。
「……！ ……！」
「『自分』をないがしろにして、死神なんかに頼るからそうなるんだよ。お別れだ、〝増田〟君。いや、〈アノニマス・ダイアリー〉……」
黒帽子が、世界の敵としての〝増田〟に名前を付けた、まさにその時、ワイヤーの圧力がとうとう限界を超え、〝増田〟という存在に決定的な傷を付ける音が鳴った。
「…………うぅん？」
土曽十口（つちそ・とぐち）は、パソコンデスクの上にだらしなくうつ伏せになっていた上半身を起こした。
締め切っていたはずのカーテンが何かのはずみでわずかに開いており、そこから差し込む朝日に目を灼かれる。不健康な生活をしている女子大生には、その爽やかな光は眩しすぎた。
どうやら、ネットをしながらいつの間に寝落ちしていたらしい。付けっぱなしにしていたヘッドホンからは、午後から日暮れにかけて軽い夕立ちが降ったことを歌う、ハスキーな男性ボーカルの声が流れている。
「んんー……痛っ？」
しつこい眠気を振り払うように大きく伸びをしていると、首の周りに妙な痛みを感じた。
スマホのインカメラで確認すると、寝ている時にヘッドホンのコードがからまったのか、首をぐるりと一周する赤い痕がついていた。それは、本来平凡な容姿のはずの十口が人混みの中でも目立って浮いてしまいそうなぐらい、はっきりとした線だった。何かの目印のようでもある。
「うわ、この痕しばらく残りそう……」
あるいは、一生消えないのかもしれない。なぜかそんな風にも思えた。
それから急に、2年になってからサボりがちで4年間での卒業が怪しくなっている単位のこと、入学直後に一度参加して以来まったく顔を出していないサークルのこと、この前の正月に帰省しなかったせいでしつこく電話をかけてくる両親のことなどが、一度に思い出された。
――なんで突然、こんな当たり前のことばかり？ たしかに、私自身の問題ではあるけど……
そんなことを考えながらふとディスプレイに目を向けると、ブラウザには最後に開いていたらしいニュースサイトが表示されていた。見るともなくページをスクロールしていく途中、
という文字が目に入った。
「……」
『岩……海氏の来社時にお茶を出さなかった事実が明らかとなり……』
『消息筋によれば、この一連の動きには二人組の犯罪者、通称“ホーリィ＆ゴースト”の関与があるとも……』
「…………」
しかし、それを見てももはや十口の胸には何の想いも湧き上がってはこないのだった。いや、もともと「想い」などというものは無かったのかもしれない。
ただ、自分がひどく無駄なことに時間を費やしていたような、途轍もない徒労感だけが泡のごとく浮かび上がったが、それもすぐに弾けて消えた。
「……よし！」
無理やり声を出して、十口は気持ちを切り替えた。
今までがどうであれ、これからは充実した実生活を目指して生きていけばよい。そのために必要な指針も既に示されているのだから。
すなわち、
『十分な睡眠』
『適度な運動』
『瞑想』
この4つだ。
それらを実践すべく、まず第一歩として十口は、人生の時間を無駄に奪うだけの箱であるパソコンの電源を――ためらいもなく落としたのだった。
