エロゲには泣きゲーというジャンルがある。傾向として18禁要素は少なく、その必然性が薄いこともままあることから時にエロ不要論が主張されたり、あるいは泣きゲーはエロゲではないと揶揄する人もいるジャンルである。
しかし「一般に、泣いたあと人間は気分がよくなる」(ウィリアム・フレイⅡ『涙―人はなぜ泣くのか』)。快楽を得ながら体液を体外に排出する行為をエロと称するのであれば、その意味で泣きゲーがエロゲの一ジャンルであることは間違いない。
泣きゲーはある日突然出現したものではなく、それはどうプレイヤーの涙を誘ったかの技術の積層であり、様式の歴史である。個々の作品論は星の数ほど存在し語り尽くされてきたが、この歴史という点での言及は少ない。当時それは歴史ではなくリアルタイムだったのだから、当然といえば当然ではあるが。
2016年現在、エロゲ論壇は死に、泣きゲーが語られることも少なくなった。
だが、だからこそ、最初からぶっ通してやり直してみることでその変遷について、その後に何が継承されていったのかという点で俯瞰することが出来るのではないか。
ということでやり直したので、増田に書きなぐっておく。
そもそもエロゲの目的は何かといえば、もちろんエロである。主役はエロCGであり、脇役に過ぎない物語の出来を評価する者などいなかった。
その様子が変わり始めるのは80年代後半、『リップスティックアドベンチャー』(フェアリーテール,1988/5)辺りからである。エロゲが一つの娯楽物語として成立することが示されたことでプレイヤーはその物語性に目を向け始め、脇役だった物語はSFやホラーなど様々な要素を取り入れていく。その一つが「感動」であった。
例として、早くも1991年の『ELLE』(elf)に対して「ホロリとした」という感想が存在する(小林義寛『ゲーマーはエロと戯れるか』)。泣ける物語かというと微妙だが、今プレイしても確かに面白いSFエロゲであり、感動的要素が含まれていると言える作品である。
人は感動すると涙腺が弛むことがある。逆に言えば、涙腺が弛む種類の感動がある。この点での先行研究として米沢嘉博の『マンガで読む「涙」の構造』があるが、そこで昭和の泣ける少女マンガ、少年マンガを分析した米沢は、女性は不幸における愛と感動の物語に泣き、男性は友情、努力、勝利の感動に泣く、としている。
男性向けであるはずのエロゲはしかし、何を血迷ったか「不幸における愛と感動」を物語に取り込むことに成功する。
『DESIRE』(C's ware,1994/7)、『EVE』(C's ware,1995/11)、更に『この世の果てで恋を唄う少女YU-NO』(elf,1996/12)と傑作を連発した剣乃ゆきひろはいずれも物語の中核に少女の悲劇を配した。それは壮大かつ感動的な物語の帰結としての落涙をしばしば生み、その感想に「泣いた」というものが少なくない。
さらに『同級生2』(elf,1995/1)の桜子シナリオにおいていわゆる難病物がエロゲに導入される。それは当時十分に涙を誘うものであったとして、これが泣きゲーの元祖だとする説も存在する(小林,前掲)。
努力・勝利の感動が無かったわけではない。例えば『闘神都市2』(ALICESOFT,1994/12)は自分の無力さが生んだ悲劇をきっかけに、強くなるために精神をすり潰し、廃人になってでも最後の敵を倒す物語であり、高く評価された。……しかしそこにはやはり「悲劇」がつきまとっている。
「不幸における愛と感動」は、こうしてエロゲで広く受けいれられていく。
難病物は概ね、主人公とヒロインの仲が深まるにつれて病状が悪化する展開をとる。これを病気に限定せず、「不幸」に一般化したものを涼元悠一は「萌やし泣き」と呼ぶ(涼元悠一『ノベルゲームのシナリオ作成技法』)。ヒロインとの幸福な日常をまず描いてから一気に雰囲気を暗転して二人の不幸な状況を綿密に描写、涙腺の緩んだプレイヤーに最後の一押しをするという、泣きゲーに慣れた人にはお馴染みのそれである。
この萌やし泣きは、しかし突如エロゲに登場したわけではない。
前述の闘神都市2には、ごく短いが構造上萌やし泣きと解釈しうるイベントが存在する。同級生2の桜子シナリオは難病物である以上もちろん萌やし泣きだが、その不幸描写は非常に短く、またオチが「主人公の勘違い」というギャグである。それは手法としては古くから存在しており、変わってきたのは、それを物語上どの割合で展開するかという点であった。
1997年5月、それが一つの分水嶺を超える。『ToHeart』(Leaf)のHMX-12マルチのシナリオは、萌やし泣きを1ルート全てを費やして実現した。
おそらくこれが(エロゲ上で)萌やし泣きの威力が十分に発揮された最初の例だろう。彼女の物語は感動的な場面をクライマックスに据え、それ以外の要素――ギャグも皮肉もセンス・オブ・ワンダーも滲ませること無く、ストレートに終わった。そのシンプルさに価値があったと言え、本作は多くのプレイヤーから「泣いた」と絶賛された。
そしてもう一つ、作り手の意思という点でも分水嶺を越えたものが登場する。『MOON.』(Tactics,1997/11)が「鬼畜サイコ涙腺弛まし系ADV」と自ら名乗ったことは、その後の歴史的意味でも強く象徴的である。もし泣かすという意思で作られたものを泣きゲーと呼ぶならば、その明示という点で最初の泣きゲーは本作と言うこともできるかもしれない。
MOON.は大量のエロシーンを擁し、エキセントリックな人物造形も無く、萌やし泣きでもない。後の作品よりも本作が泣けるし好きだという人もいるが、多くの人を確実に泣かせる威力に本作があと一歩不足したことは事実と思う。
とはいえエロゲはついに、プレイヤーを泣かすことを主目的とし始めたのである。
ToHeartで泣かせる物語構造が確立し、MOON.で泣かす意思が示され、そしてそれは『ONE』(Tactics,1998/5)において結実する。MOON.のスタッフが作ったそのエロゲには、萌やし泣きが全ヒロインのルートで導入された。
当時の多くのプレイヤーにとって、それは致死量だったと言っていいだろう。
本作はMOON.と変わって18禁要素は非常に薄く、無くても物語は成立する。物語は全ルートで感動と涙が目的に据えられ、それしかない。にも関わらずこれがプレイヤーの絶賛を浴びたことは、「泣かせること」がそれ単独でジャンルを成立させられることを示していた。
今やり直してみると甘い部分も多い。しかし『sense off』(otherwise,2000)、『それは舞い散る桜のように』(BasiL,2002)など、本作の影響下にありつつも秀逸な作品がのちにいくつも生まれたことを考えれば、その影響力と価値を軽んじられる者はいないだろう。
6月、MOON.を作りONEを作ったチームは独立してKeyと名乗り、『Kanon』をリリースする。これがどれだけの信者を獲得したかは言うまでもないだろう。
特に技術的な面でKanonはONEよりも洗練されている。OPとED、泣かせるための特殊演出などのソフトウェア面はもちろん、泣かすための専用BGMが用意された、という点も大きい。1997年の『アトラク=ナクア』(ALICESOFT,1997/12)は物語のクライマックス、その絶望的状況下で「Going On」が初めて静かに流れ出すことで異様な精神的高揚をプレイヤーに与えたが、これが事前に何度も使われていたら効果は半減していただろう。これと同様のアプローチをKanonは泣かすという目的で採っている。
Kanonから3週間後に発売された『加奈』(D.O.,1999/6)もまた、この時代の泣きゲーの金字塔である。ONEやKanonが物語を中盤過ぎまでギャグで埋め尽くしたのに対し、加奈は10年以上に渡る兄妹の闘病生活を正面からシリアスに描いた難病物である。リアリティのある物語という点で「新しい」泣きゲーだったと言え、今なお評価は高い。
――一方で、ToHeartもONEもKanonも加奈も、悪く言えばただのお涙頂戴である。ハッピーエンドは奇跡や幸運によってのみ訪れ、主人公たちは運命に翻弄される無力な存在でしかない。こうしたお涙頂戴は今も昔も根強い人気を誇るが、一方で毛嫌いする人がいることも事実である。
興味深いことに泣きゲーは、これらのお涙頂戴では泣けない人々をも泣かせようとするかのように、別の「泣かせる何か」の模索を少しずつ始めていく。
知名度も低く地味だが言及しておきたい良作として、1月に発売された『Lien』(PURPLE,2000/1)がある。不慮の事故で幽霊になった主人公とその周囲の人々が残された2週間でその死に向き合い、改めて別れを告げる物語であり、主人公が生き返ることは無い。従ってお涙頂戴の文法に則っているが、しかしその最後において、彼らは前を向き、笑顔で別れを告げる。別れは悲しみしか生まないものではなく、人の強さを示すものでもあることをLienは描いていた。
そして9月、Keyのリリースした『AIR』は約束された勝利を遂げる。物語はもちろん難病物で、ヒロインは最後に死ぬ。その死を「ほとんどなんの意味もない」(東浩紀『ゲーム的リアリズムの誕生 動物化するポストモダン2』)とするならば、これは従来通りのお涙頂戴だろう。
しかし、彼女が無意味に死んだことが悲しくてプレイヤーは泣いたのだろうか。
もちろんそういう人もいるだろう。だがかの有名な「ゴール」は、彼女が最後まで努力し、やりきったこと――笑顔で幸福な記憶を全うしたからこそ、泣いた人も少なからずいたと筆者は考える。最後の別れにおいて、彼女は必死で前を向いていた。
悲劇の象徴としての別れの描き方と、それに対する姿勢は少しずつ変化を見せ始める。
ところで萌やし泣きの多くは幸福8割、不幸2割程度の文量配分で構成される(※数字は筆者の体感であり、根拠はない)。これを反転し、幸福を2割以下、不幸を8割以上にするとどうなるか。
MOON.もその一つだが、『DiaboLiQuE』(ALICESOFT,1998/5)や『銀色』(ねこねこソフト,2000/8)など、爆発的に売れることは無くとも鬱ゲーは途切れること無く続いてきた。特に銀色の執拗な鬱展開は秀逸であり、未だ根強くファンがいることも頷けるものである(個人的にはDiaboLiQuEももっと評価されていいと思う)。
そして8月、幸福と不幸がほぼ半々、つまり鬱ゲーであり泣きゲーでもある『君が望む永遠』(age,2001/8)が発売される。
男女関係の修羅場をシリアスに描いたエロゲといえば『WHITE ALBUM』(Leaf,1998/5)が有名だが、そこでは主人公が修羅場の矢面に立たされることはない。対して本作のメインシナリオでは主人公は徹底して矢面に立たされ、主人公が別れを切り出すことでのみ悲劇は終幕する。
誰を切り捨てるかは、プレイヤーに選択肢が突き付けられることで行われる。だからこそ最後に彼らが再び笑い合える可能性が示されることはプレイヤーを安堵させ、涙を誘った。彼らは奇跡によってではなく、心の強さによって悲劇を克服する。
さらに11月、物語の殆どがギャグで占められ、物語の構造自体は従来の萌やし泣きの延長ながら、にも関わらず枠を踏み越えたものが登場する。『家族計画』(D.O.,2001/11)である。
家族に捨てられた連中が偶然集まり、やむなく家族を偽装し、衝突しながら家族になっていき、崩壊し、再び家族になる様が描かれる作品である。加奈やAIRでも家族愛は描かれたが、いずれも兄妹あるいは母娘の二者間に閉じている。対して家計は父母兄姉妹という集団の絆を描く。
襲いかかる不幸は彼らの手によって跳ね除けられる。プレイヤーはもはや誰かの不幸にではなく、茉莉がお兄さんになって下さいと訴え、準が最後にスプーンを咥え、その家族としての努力が実ったことに涙する。
なにより家計ではもはや誰一人死ぬことはない。君望もメインシナリオでは誰も死なない。誰かを失う悲しさだけが泣かせる手段ではない。悲劇に敢然と抗い、心の強さで打ち勝つだけでも人は泣くのである。
……などと枠を広げ、新しい要素を貪欲に取り込むパイオニアばかりではない。泣きゲーというジャンルを充実させたのは既存の要素で構成された作品群である。
例えば『flutter of birds』(シルキーズ,2001/2)は極めて基本に忠実な難病物だし、特定ルートで萌やし泣きを取り込んだ『みずいろ』(ねこねこソフト,2001/4)や『水夏』(CIRCUS,2001/7)、『グリーングリーン』(GROOVER,2001/10)はいずれも好評を博した。またDESIRE同様、悲劇的シナリオの感動としての落涙であれば『腐り姫』(Liar Soft,2002/2)はこの年の作品では秀逸である。
また、集団間の絆も広く扱われていく。
『うたわれるもの』(Leaf,2002/4)ではSRPGというジャンル上の必然もあるだろうが、家族的な仲間との絆が描かれている。『世界ノ全テ』(たまソフト,2002/4)や『ロケットの夏』(TerraLunar,2002/10)は後半こそ二者間が主軸になるものの、いずれも部活を通して仲間と触れ合うことで主人公が成長し、仲間との絆を育むことで成立する物語である。
ONEとKanonとAIRを足して3で割ったような『SNOW』(Studio Mebius,2003/1)、あるいは『てのひらを、たいように』(Clear,2003/1)では、困難に対する仲間の存在がより大きな価値を持つ。その最後は奇跡による解決とはいえ、ヒロインのために仲間全員が努力し、足掻くことでハッピーエンドが訪れる様は「与えられたもの」というより「勝ち取ったもの」という印象が強い。
これらを「みんなは一人のために」とするならば、「一人はみんなのために」もまた登場する。『CROSS†CHANNEL』(FlyingShine,2003/9)である。

To the Japanese government, let me ask that you treat visual novels in the same way as other art, sold privately to private consumers. Stories that can be told in books, comics, and movies should not be prohibited simply because they are displayed on a computer screen.
To the creators of visual novels, in Japan and the rest of the world, let me just ask that you resist calls for self-censorship and continue to tell the stories that you wish to tell, and that audiences wish to experience.
