...って思ったんだけど、ググったら出てきた。嬉しさのあまりそれを報告。

...で、どういう意味なんだろう。
Wikipediaでインディアン関連の項目を眺めていると、各所に「酋長とはあくまで調停者であって指導者や代表者ではない」と強調するような記述が出て来る。
インディアンたちには指導者など存在せず、それを白人たちは理解できなかったので、酋長を指導者と見なして見当違いな交渉を行ったのだ、といった主張である。
しかし、Wikipedia以外で同様の主張は見つけられない。
ちなみに戦士集団だったアパッチ族には「酋長に戦士が服従する」という義務も風習もない。戦士は結束はしてもすべて個人行動で動くものであって、戦士たちはジェロニモ個人を慕って抵抗戦をともにしたのである。ジェロニモが軍事的な指導をしたこともない。
インディアン社会のチーフ（酋長）とは、交渉の矢面に立つ「調停者」のことであって、「指導者」や「首長」ではない。合議制社会であるインディアン部族は首長制ではなく、アフリカの部族に見られるような「部族長」は存在しない。

これはいいことなんだと思うが、僕の前職の会社（日本企業）で、びっくりするような通達が出たらしい。

3カ月の残業時間が210時間を超えたとき、僕が違法だと問い詰められ、残業はしていなかったこととして申請するようになったこと。
一方、親会社から来た部長は、ろくに仕事をしないながら、月に100時間以上の残業代を請求し、支払われていた、ということ。
いいのか、本当に？
子会社の僕たちは、何百時間と残業をして、その残業代が払われていない。残業時間を規制する必要はない。残業代が支払われればよいのではないだろうか？
日本政府がどこに向かおうと思っているのかわからないのですが、このままだと、うちの会社は最もブラックな会社になるのではないのかと危惧します。
お客さんと、急きょ会食をすることになり、お客様の支払いも含めて十数万円の支払いをさせられて、その後、会社に経費として請求せず、自腹を強いる上司。
プロジェクトの最もハイライトの部分、式典や発表等ハレの直前で、手柄を自分のものにしてしまう上司。そこで、部署移動です。
お客様からのフィーを僕だからと言って増額してもらったにもかかわらず、僕を外して減額されてしまったその上司。でも、手柄はすべて上司のものです。
労基法の違反は、上司ではなく、長く働いた部下の勝手な責任で、かつ、年金がはく奪される、懲戒になってしまう、ということです。
これまで知らなかったのですが、その通達が言い渡されたとき、上司からでたセリフがこれ「これまで、長く働いても、勤怠管理上は、まったく残業していないように
見せかけることが評価されてきた。でも、今は、電通の事件があったように、政府がそれを取り締まりだした。なので、これからは、正直に申告することが求められる。
過去の勤務状況に関してもそうだ。だから、早く修正申告しろ。もし、後から過剰労働が判明した場合、その上司も、過剰労働したものも、両方懲戒の対象だ」

と、ある本で読んだので練習してみた。

だった。
さて実演。グーグル翻訳を使う。よく自動翻訳ネタで使われる『走れメロス』の冒頭を題材にする。
まずは原文。

何度か書き直して、なんとか読める英語に翻訳できる文章にした。結果は次の通り。

少子化問題が人口に膾炙した当たりからさ、何か世の中の風向きが変わったよな。
最近はそういう人種が「コミュニケーション強者」としてむしろ賞賛されている気がする。
確かに少子化を解決するには、異性をピックアップしてセックスすることが必要条件だから、
そういう能力が高いことが賞賛される空気はわからなくもないけど、
鳥取の自治体みたいに歌舞伎町の人気ホストを講師として婚活教室を開くとかはさすがに行き過ぎだと思う。

東大生のHIS騒動にも見られるように、国内トップノッチの学生ですら「女を売る」みたいなことに抵抗がなくなってきているし、
その下の層にしてみれば、地下アイドルのみならず、水商売とか風俗みたいので稼ぐのすらむしろカッコイイってくらいの価値観も見受けられるし、
一億総淫乱化が進んでるっていうと言い過ぎだけど、現代日本が性規範の激変期を迎えてるってのは間違いないよね。

I applaud the young kid’s effort and it’s exciting to see such interest in the ancient Maya and remote sensing technology in such a young person. However, ground-truthing is the key to remote sensing research. You have to be able to confirm what you are identifying in a satellite image or other type of scene. In this case, the rectilinear nature of the feature and the secondary vegetation growing back within it are clear signs of a relic milpa. I’d guess its been fallow for 10-15 years. This is obvious to anyone that has spent any time at all in the Maya lowlands. I hope that this young scholar will consider his pursuits at the university level so that his next discovery (and there are plenty to be made) will be a meaningful one.

15 Year Old Discovers Hidden Mayan City
A fifteen year old from Quebec has used satellite photos, Mayan astronomy and his own intuition to solve some questions about the placement of Mayan cities and to discover a new city. William Gadoury loves everything Mayan and was studying Mayan constellations when he overlayed a constellation map on a map of the Yucatan Peninsula. He discovered that the known cities, like Chichen Itza and Uxmal, were exactly lined up with the stars in major Mayan constellations. Using this same map and thought process, he noticed that the third star in the 23rd constellation he was studying was missing. He found satellite images from space agencies, including NASA, JAXA (from Japan) and Google Earth, and discovered a third city where the third star of the constellation said it would be. He has named this city, as yet unexplored on the ground, K'aak Chi, or Mouth of Fire. The lost city has a pyramid that is 86 meters high, as well as 30 other visible (from the photos) structures. It is on the border with Belize. This young man is hoping to go to the International Science Fair in Brazil in 2017 but is lacking in the necessary funds.

Być może się czepiam, ale gdyby Luthor się w tym filmie nie przedstawił, nie miałbym pojęcia kim właściwie jest ten rudy gość, który z jakiegoś powodu postanowił być bardzo złośliwy.

Być może się czepiam, ale gdyby Luthor się w tym filmie nie przedstawił, nie miałbym pojęcia kim właściwie jest ten rudy gość, który z jakiegoś powodu postanowił być bardzo złośliwy.

That start gives off a strange whiff of competition with—or emulation of—Marvel’s irrepressibly successful “Avengers” films, the first of which, in particular, is an unabashed post-9/11 allegory. (The connection is surprisingly direct. One of the climactic moments of “Batman v Superman”—a leap from the ground that vaults through the atmosphere and into outer space—is a virtual duplication, both dramatically and visually, of a similar climactic feat in “The Avengers.”) In Snyder’s new film, Superman appears, from the start, as a hopeless naïf, a battler for good who doesn’t admit to his own capacity to do incidental evil, a blinkered warrior who deploys his nearly infinite powers according to his unquestioned moral intuition rather than to the prudent calculation of results.

The EU’s regulatory system, among the strictest in the world, depends on businesses reporting suspicious transactions of hydrogen peroxide, acetone and a number of other chemicals to the police. Businesses are urged to look for a number of red flags, such as if the customer’s use for the chemical is unclear or the purchase is made using large amounts of cash. The rules also ban consumers from owning seven potentially dangerous chemical solutions, including hydrogen peroxide solution, in concentrations higher than 12%.
But the fact that the chemicals have so many commercial applications—from disinfecting pools to removing nail polish—makes identifying suspicious transactions challenging. Authorities and experts say the huge quantity of legitimate trade of such widely-used chemicals means finding suspicious transactions is effectively like picking a needle out of a haystack.
“It’s a very difficult area because there are thousands of legitimate uses for these substances,” said Peter Newport, chief executive of the Chemical Business Association, which represents U.K. chemical distributors.
Some officials have also expressed worries that not all of the 28 EU governments have swiftly implemented the regulations, failing, for example, to create a contact point in law enforcement that would investigate suspicious transactions.
It remains unclear how the Islamic State operatives obtained the chemicals. An official with the Belgian Association of Chemical Distributors wasn’t aware of any suspicious transactions reported to the police in recent months. A Belgian police spokesman declined to comment.

The monitoring program used by customs agencies, called Global Shield, was sought by U.S. authorities seeking to stop the flow of bomb-making chemicals into Afghanistan, where insurgents used them to build bombs that were killing U.S. troops. These chemicals were mainly ammonium-nitrate fertilizer or potassium chlorate shipped from China for use in Pakistan’s match industry and then smuggled across the border.
Now shipments of these chemicals crisscrossing the globe are monitored through a system maintained at the World Customs Organization in Brussels. Customs agencies are supposed to warn each other about suspicious shipments, using some of the same criteria identified in the European regulations.
TATP poses a particularly serious threat to aviation, says Mr. Keinan. The chemical isn’t detectable, he says, by the machines installed at many airports, which are able to uncover more common, nitrogen-based explosives such as TNT. Dogs can also be trained to detect the material.
