そこまで考えてしまうほど英語の勉強を拒絶する生徒の話は強烈だった

時々大切なものと叫ばれる「愛国心」、そして日本やそれに関するものがすごいことをすると熱狂する国民。
ところが私はそういったものに引き込まれないどころか、つい冷めた目で見てしまう。
そんなエピソードを書き綴っていくが、自分でも理由がわからないしどうすればいいのかわからない。
時々ニュースに出てくる、「すごいことをした日本人」。スポーツや学術など分野は多岐にわたる。
言い換えると、だから何、というもので、別に私までうれしくはならない。理由は簡単だ。自分の功績ではないからだ。
スポーツ競技の日本代表は、「すごいことをする日本人」としてメディアに大きく取り上げられるものの代表例だ。
日本代表がスポーツ大会に出る時期になると日本代表戦関係の番組ばかりで埋め尽くされる。
どこもニッポンニッポンうるさい。番組内容もインタビューも日本の応援しかしない。これでは中継・特集番組じゃなくて日本礼賛番組だ。
まるでエロサイトのバナー広告のようだ。1局くらい、日本以外を応援したり、せめて日本に肩入れせずまんべんなく取り上げるようなところがあってもいいのに。
これについても、上記と同じ理由で日本代表を応援できない。勝とうが負けようがどうでもいい。
もし日本代表が勝ったら100万円くれます、とかなら本気になって応援するが、勝ったところでこちらに何のメリットはない。
というか、なぜ日本国籍があるだけで日本代表を応援しなければいけないのか。
別に興味なかろうが、どこか別のところを応援しようが自由ではないか。
その前に、今回のWBC、対戦相手に負けろとかいうのがTwitterのランキングに出てたぞ。恥ずかしくないのか。人のこと言えないぞ。反省しろ。
敬うかどうかはこちらの勝手。単に自分とは関係ない人なので、別に敬う義務はないと考えている。
正直言って天皇が病気になろうが死のうがこちらには関係ない話。ただそれだけの話だ。
メディアでは皇族を様付けで呼び、まるで何も影のない神様のように扱っているが、釈然としない。
まるで問題点を意図的にそらしているかのような印象を受け、どうしても天皇そのものを信用できない。
「天皇陛下は日本国民の幸せを祈っています」とか言われるのも釈然としない。
「日本国民の幸せを祈っています」とか言われても、だから何なの。祈られるだけで幸せになるなら今頃大金持ちだ。
最後に区別しておきたいのは堀江貴文氏のように炎上狙いでわざと天皇を貶しているわけではないことだ。
単純に敬う必要性が感じられないから個人的に敬わないだけの話である。
小学生のころ、「しゃかぽん」(朝日新聞出版)という雑誌を父親が買ってきてくれた。そこには世界各国を紹介するセクションがあり、これをきっかけに海外に興味を持った。

学内には英会話講師が常駐しており、友人がいなかった私は毎日のように通っていた。
大学院のころ、外資系企業でのインターンシップの機会があり、そこで海外留学に十分なだけの資金を得られた。
しかし留学には指導教員の許可が要るものの仲が悪かったので、100円ショップで指導教員と同じ印鑑を買って押印し、そのまま出願した。
事務にはバレることはなく、奨学金(もちろん給付型)付きで送り出してもらえた。
留学の日々は非常に楽しく、刻一刻と近づく帰国の日が恨めしく思えた。
結局帰国の日を迎えてしまったのだが、羽田空港での日系企業の広告を見て「どうせブラック企業なんだろ」と思ってしまった。
ちなみに帰国したのは2020年2月初頭、新型コロナウィルスのパンデミックが始まる2週間ほど前だ。帰れなくなった方がよかったと何度思ったことか。
別に法律で決まっているわけでもないのに、なんで自分の国に協力しないといけないのか理解に苦しむ。
協力したところで何のメリットがあるのか見いだせないので協力する価値がない、と考える。
そもそもこちらは自国に協力するために生まれたわけではない。自分の人生は自分のものだ。なのに、なぜそうさせられるのか。
例えば「子供を産め増やせ」というが、なぜ今までの失策の尻ぬぐいをしないといけないのか。そんなもの移民でもやって自分で解決しろ、と言いたい。
ところで、「みんなで協力しよう」的な言葉がある。
東日本大震災や東京オリンピック前、今回の感染症の直後など、こういったメッセージを目にしたかと思う。
もう一度書くが、だからなんで協力しないといけないのか。私は奴隷じゃない。
協力したい人は勝手にすればいいが、なぜ協力しないことが非難の対象になるのか。
そこまで協力してほしければ、労働契約でも結べばいいだろう。
インターネットはもちろん、書店にも韓国に対するヘイトスピーチが散見される。
私の父親もそれに影響されたかのような言動をするようになった。
ならば私は逆に韓国の人たちと仲良くなりたいと思うようになった。
そこで、上記の留学で一緒になったKAIST出身の韓国人と仲良くなってみようとした。
「今難しい時期だが、ぜひあなたとはもちろん、韓国の皆さんと仲良くなりたい」というと、とても喜んでいた。
それを機にその人とは仲良くなり、毎日食事に行ったり、休日も一緒にするほどの中になった。今ではFacebookで定期的にやりとりしている。
ちなみに、韓国ばかり(日本からの)ヘイトのターゲットになっているが、日本人にヘイトを向ける人はどの国にもいる。
会ってみたらわかるが、韓国人はとても好意的。こういうヘイトスピーチって、外国語リテラシーも渡航経験もない人が想像で言ってるに過ぎないんだな、と改めて感じた。
何というか、個人的には「日本は生まれ育った国に過ぎず、それ以上の感情はない」と思っている。
それに、「別に住みやすければどこでもいいし、なんならそのためにどこでもいきれるようなスキルを磨いた方が効果的」とさえ思う。
