文学ベスト100と検索すると、国内に限ってもいろいろなランキングが出てくる。英語圏では、ベスト100を選んだときどのような小説がランクインするのか、気になって調べてみた。
そうすると、日本と同様にたくさんの種類のランキングが出てくるが、これらをひとつひとつ紹介するのも退屈だ。
だから、それなりに信頼がありそうないくつかのランキングを選んで、それらにくり返し選出されている作品名をここに挙げてみたいと思う。
なにをもって信頼があるというのかは難しい問題だが、だいたい以下のような基準を満たしているランキングだけを取り上げることにした。
英語で検索しているからには、英語で書かれた小説が多くランクインするのは当然なのだが、英語圏に限らず、世界の文学を選出の対象にしていることを条件とした。なので英米文学オンリーとかなのは避けた。
2000年以降に発表された小説の割合が高すぎたり、「ハリー・ポッターシリーズ」のような、あまりにエンタメ寄りの小説を選出しているものは除外した。
「ハリー・ポッター」が文学かどうかは知らないが、それが文学ベスト100に選ばれているランキングが参考になるかというと、あまりならないんじゃないかな。
どのランキングにしても19世紀以降の西洋文学に偏りすぎなのだが、そこはもう仕方がない。
このような基準で選んだランキングは以下の4つ。検索すればソースはすぐ出てくると思う。
・ガーディアン誌による「The 100 greatest novels of all time」（いつ誌上に掲載されたのかはわからなかった）
・Goodreadsによる 「Top 100 Literary Novels of All Time」（国内でいうと読書メーターや読書ログみたいな位置づけのサイト。ユーザーが投票して選出している）
・Modern Library（アメリカの出版社）による「100 best novels」
・アメリカの文学者Daniel S. Burtによる「the Novel 100: A Ranking of the Greatest Novels of All Time」（同タイトルの書籍がある。Burtは英文学の講師をしていたらしい）
4つのランキングのうちすべてに選出された作品は、ナボコフの「ロリータ」と、ジョイスの「ユリシーズ」の2つだった。ロリータすごい。
4つのランキングのうち3つに選出されたのは、以下の28作品。
このうち22作品はすでに読んでいた。
けっこうそれっぽいタイトルが並んでいるように見えるが、日本ではほとんどなじみのない作家も中にはいる。ジョセフ・ヘラーとかフォード・マドックス・フォードとか。
フォードの「善良な軍人」が翻訳されているかはわからなかったが、これを除けばすべて翻訳で読むことができる。すばらしい。
ブコメの指摘から、フォードの"The Good Soldier"（上では「善良な軍人」と訳した）は、「かくも悲しい話を…」という邦題で翻訳されていることがわかった。ありがとう。
簡単に言えば持ってる人／持ってない人の二項対立で描かれる映画なんだけど、その境界や定義っていうのがすごく曖昧で行き来する人が多いのが現実ぽいと思う。
ミュージカル映画としては素敵な映画だったけど、その一方で興行として人権侵害甚だしい見世物小屋としてのサーカスが人気を博していたことは考えなければならないことだと感じた。
バーナムは人の個性に囚われない、面白い人ならなんでもいい、という反差別派のように見えるけど、差別される側／する側で二項対立させたとき、バーナムは間違いなく差別する側なんだよね。
現実ではもっとペテン師、興行師としてクソ男だったと思うんだけど、そこを美化しすぎてる、というか観客にそう感じさせるストーリーになってると思った。現実の度合いと映画の度合いが違いすぎるのが気持ち悪かったな。
たぶんヒュージャックマン以外の全員に共感できるし、逆に言えばヒュージャックマンには全く共感できない。
この映画の根本的な価値観は人生の生きづらさ、満たされなさみたいなもだと思って、だからこそNever Enoughがすごく効果的だと感じた。まぁレベッカファーガソンのあの終わらせ方には全く納得できてないけど…
一度負った心の傷は完全に癒されることは全くなくて心のどこかに絶対残ってしまって、だからこそ何をしても満たされないし過度な成功を求めてしまうの、なんとなくわかるような気がした。
でも結局楽団の皆がヒュージャックマンに本当に怒りきれなかったのは彼の満たされなさをみんな理解してたからだと思う。
私も本当に信頼している人には何されても許してしまうだろうなっていう気持ちがあるんだけど、それに近い気がした。ただ、そう解釈するにはストーリーが不十分すぎると思ったし、This Is Meをバーナム(ヒュージャックマン)が見てない時点で、彼らのことをわかってあげる人はいないのかなと切なくなった。
もちろん、みんなでThis Is Meを歌うところは本当にかっこよくて痺れたけど。ただ、この歌を主題歌とするならもっとフリークスと呼ばれた劇団のみんなに焦点を当てて欲しかった。このストーリーなら主題歌The Greatest Showmanの方でよかったと思うよ。
あと、十分に説明されなかったところが多すぎて…一番謎だったの、りんごをくれたおばさんとの出会いなんだけど、あれは一体何を意味してるの？？ヒュージャックマンが単なる差別主義者っていうことを明らかにさせただけだと思うんだけど…
あと、町の住民がなぜそこまでフリークスとサーカスを嫌ったのかが描かれてなさすぎて、理由もなく差別するほうを一方的に悪として描いていて、その反動でヒュージャックマンがいい人に見えるってだけでは…って思ったりもした。
あと、LALALANDと比較されがちだけど映画のテーマやモチーフが違うのにそんな簡単に比較できないでしょう…好みの問題でいえば私は完全にLALALAND派ですし。
ただ、似ている部分でいえば序盤の構成はやっぱりLALALANDとまったく同じだと思う。
特にAnother Day Of Sun～Someone In The Crowdの流れとThe Greatest Showman～Million Dreamsの流れはすごく似てると思った。観客の判断力を奪う圧倒的な歌唱力と演出はやっぱり素敵でした。

前からずっと思ってるんだけど春樹ってノーベル賞向きじゃないんだよね。
小説家としては当然一流だと思うし、いくつか気に入ってる話もあるよ。でも「ノーベル賞」となると話は違う。
そもそもノーベル賞ってのはノーベルの遺言に基づいて運営されているわけで、その遺言というのがこんな内容。

ポイントは太字にした２箇所で、
"in an ideal direction"については解釈が難しいところで、上では「理想的方向」とか直訳したけど、実際には文学傾向が「理想主義」である作品のことを指す、と解釈されてる。
ノーベル財団でも何が「理想主義」の条件を満たすのか延々と議論しているけれども（https://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/themes/literature/espmark/）、少なくとも「人類に対して貢献」という条件やら、他の賞のチョイス（物理学、化学、医学・生理学、そして平和）から、まあだいたいノーベルが文学賞に対して何を望んでたのかは察せられるよねって話。
それを踏まえて、これまでのところ、ノーベル財団はおおよそノーベルの意図をそのまま汲んで受賞者を決めていると思う。
前回のボブディランはプロテストソング（反戦や体制批判を歌う曲）の旗手。
前々回のスヴェトラーナは言論統制下でチェルノブイリ事故の証言を集めたジャーナリストだという。
もっと遡っても、やっぱり反戦とか人種問題とか、タブーに切り込んで何か描き出したみたいなのが明らかに多いんだよね。
財団は、そういうことをはっきりとは言ってないんだけどさ。
それで春樹って、何を書いたの？
確かに面白い。人気もある。売上も出した。人間の業や本質を描いている面もある。
でもそれって、ノーベルの遺志とは実は全然関係ない。ノーベル賞と文学アワードは違うってことを、いつになったら春樹ファンは理解するのかな。

○○は理想主義的ではないけど受賞したじゃないか、というコメントが多い。
確かに、個々を見ると例外的な人もいるが、全体的な傾向としてはやはり反戦やら何やらに「偏っている」のは確か。
されに上で挙げたノーベル財団のURLをgoogle翻訳しながら適当に読むと、選考委員の中でも「理想主義的」の定義が揺れまくっていて、時代により選考基準が動いてきていることが丁寧に語られている。
その意味では、例外枠として春樹が取るか、選考委員の「理想主義」の定義がまたちょっと揺らいで春樹的⊆理想主義的になったタイミングで取るというのはありえるかもしれないね。
あとスヴェトラーナ・アレクシエーヴィッチをスヴェトラーナと書いた件で突っ込まれた。うんごめん。この人のことは良く知らない。
聴いてるだけで、幻覚が見えそうなぐらいの酩酊感を覚える。それでいてどこか叙情的。
後半から入ってくるラップのねっとりしたグルーヴも、また良い。
ビヨンビヨンしたベースが印象的。対照的に、ボーカルは爽やかでエモい。
ドリーミーな中盤から再びビートに回帰する時、現実に引き戻される残酷さを感じる。
悪夢が見れそう。

その点 The Great Wall は良かった。
観客を飽きさせないような、常に「うわーすげぇ」と言わせ続けるようなシーンの連続。
ストーリーなんてどうでもよくなるくらい、エンタテイメントとして良く出来てる。

The red sun slightly to the right or the east is self explanatory. While it serves as the sun and Japanese spirit it also symbolizes the flame in the Olympic torch.
Below is a great wave, dominated by the spirit of the sun. The wave is also in the shape of a T representing Tokyo and also symbolizing the torch itself. Both these 3 meanings in the torch and the sun also relate to the 3 marks of existence.
The font styles on TOKYO 2020 and the spacing of all elements as well as the size of the Olympic rings will be tweeked as I continue the larger finished painting.
Although the design will change slightly and become more refined as I continue this is the basic idea and all seeing may serve as witness.
I hope this serves as a testament of my respect for creativity, the Olympics and the wonderful people of Japan.

少し右、あるいは東（※the eastは英語だと東洋を指すことがある）にある赤い太陽は、それ自体が説明的だよね。太陽と大和魂として機能する一方、オリンピックの聖火の炎を象ってもいる。
下のはグレートウェーブ（※葛飾北斎の神奈川沖浪裏は英語だとThe Great Waveとして知られる）で、太陽の魂に気圧されている。波はTの形にもなっているけど、これはTokyoを表すのと同時に聖火のトーチ(torch)自体を象ってもいる。聖火と太陽の3つの意味は、三相（※仏教で無常、苦、無我のこと Wikipedia。ただし、これはタイなどで信仰される上座部仏教の話で、日本などの大乗仏教とはちょっと違う）とも関係があるんだ。
TOKYO 2020のフォントのスタイルや、全要素のスペース処理、五輪の大きさなんかは、もっと大きな完成版の絵の作業をしていくうちに修正されるよ。
作業をするうちにデザインは少しだけ変わって、もっと洗練されるはずだけど、これが基本的なアイディアで、見えるもの全てが証拠品となるだろう。
これが、創造性、オリンピック、日本の素晴らしい人々に対する、僕のリスペクトの証になることを願っている。

Last year Adam Sadilek, a University of Rochester researcher, and John Krumm, an engineer at Microsoft's research lab, showed they could predict a person's approximate location up to 80 weeks into the future, at an accuracy of above 80 percent. To get there, the pair mined what they described as a "massive data set" collecting 32,000 days of GPS readings taken from 307 people and 396 vehicles.

契約書の第１項が気に入らないようですが、原文は

だと思います。
特に最後の"Aren’t I the greatest?"は、冗談や自虐的な表現で使う場合が多いです。たとえば"俺すごくね（笑)"とか"私最高でしょー（泣"みたいな。
もしこの第１項を本気で息子に言っているとしたら、ご批判の通りやばいお母さんと言うことになりますが、契約条項の前後の文を読んでも、また13歳の息子にiPhoneをプレゼントすると言うアメリカ圏ではどちらかと言うと近年の子供の新しい環境・文化に理解のある行動をとっている事からもやばい感じはしないです。
どちらかと言えば、契約条項の第２項以降のかなり過保護な契約内容について、"お母さんもそれはわかってるんだけど、でも許してねー"と和らげるために第１項がある気がします。
私も"パスワードを常に教えろ"とか"iPhoneを夜７時半にはとりあげる"などの項目にはうわーって感じなので、全面的にこの契約を支持するわけではないですが、第１４項や第１７項は素敵な内容だと思いますし、そこまで全否定で批判されるほどのものではないと思いますよ。

It`s actually the first time I have written to Japanese pases.
My old brother who have been in Japan for long time introduced here to me.He said that I can write my diary right?
Anyway,I`m gonna write about my short trip for Japan.
I myself was wishing to going to Japan because my ex-girlfriend was Japanese and she always told me about "fantastic Japan".In fact in Japan I could have many fantastic experience,very polite servise in even McDonald,an a train that`s time is accurate,so fashinable people,and brabrabra.
However, the reason why I write here about my trip is not to just praise abou Japan.I wanna say something to you gays.Why do you be so surprise when we "foreigner" use chopsticks well? why do you gays be happy when we speak easy Japanese just like "KONNICHIWA"?
Why you call me American before you ask me where my birthplace?
I and some foreigner who come to Japan study about Japan and Japanese because for Love ,but many Japanese think that we do not know about Japan at all.
So please realise that we are not Idiot.We try to understand Japanese culture,Japanese custom,Japanese language.Please just treat us as your friend.
Yesterday I am going to leave here.I could have a lot of special experience.I became much like here than before.But I couldn`t make any friend.
Next time,I wanna make some friend here so please not to treat a foreigher as a foreigher.
