映画業界通によれば、ユニバーサルが満を持して公開した「オッペンハイマー」は、バービー人形の世界を実写化したコメディー映画「バービー」（ワーナーブラザーズ）との抱き合わせ。
2作品を同日に観られるようチケットを発売する「バーベンハイマー」（Barbenheimer）と呼ばれる鑑賞方法が功を奏した、と見ている。
もっとも、これに悪乗りしたワーナーブラザーズは7月31日、「バービー」に合成された原爆投下を想起させる画像の投稿に対し、同作品の米公式アカウントで好意的な反応を示した。
この映像は、原爆投下を想起させる背景に（オッペンハイマー役の）キリアン・マーフィーが右手を上げて喜ぶ（バービー役の）マーゴット・ロビ―を肩に乗せているもの。
「オッペンハイマー」は、公開と同時に副次的な現象を起こしている。
原爆第1号を投下実験したニューメキシコ州トリニティ・サイト周辺地域に住む住民の被爆者補償運動が再燃したのだ。
