学校法人「加計（かけ）学園」の獣医学部新設計画を巡り、山本幸三地方創生担当相が先月３０日の記者会見で「獣医学部の質は落ちている」と発言し、日本獣医学会などは８日、「根拠なき批判だ」と反論する声明を発表した。
獣医学共用試験に合格しない場合は、診療行為に参加する臨床実習（参加型臨床実習）を履修できなくなる。
ぞして、本試験の合格は進級の要件ではないが、「参加型臨床実習」を履修できないため、結果として6年間では卒業できなくなる。
また、獣医学共用試験では受験料を徴収するが、1人25,000円である。なお、医学・歯学及び薬学の共用試験の受験料は、それぞれ28,000円及び25,000円となっている。

共用試験は、学部教育において参加型臨床実習を実施する学生の質の確保と保証の前提として、医学・歯学では2005年から、薬学では6年制教育を契機に2010年から開始されました。
獣医学教育の充実・改善の取組において、社会の要請に応えうる実践的な獣医師の養成のためには「参加型実習」の実施が必要となります。全国獣医学関係大学代表者協議会では、参加型実習を行う学生の質の確保と保証のための方策について獣医学共用試験調査委員会を設けて調査検討し、医学・歯学・薬学の手法を参考として「獣医学共用試験」の開発を進めるべきとの答申を受け、2010年9月本協議会で準備委員会を立ち上げました。
2011年5月文科省「獣医学教育の改善・充実に関する調査研究協力者会議」の取り纏めが公表され、「共用試験の導入に向けた検討」が具体的方策として提言されました。これらの流れを受けて、2011年9月全国協議会に共用試験委員会など６つの実務委員会が設置されました。
共用試験委員会は、現在、獣医臨床教育における「診療行為に参加する学生の事前評価について社会的信頼を得る仕組み」として獣医学共用試験（veterinary common achievement test）の準備を開始しました。
2015年7月、共用試験を実施する母体としてNPO法人獣医系大学間獣医学教育支援機構が設置されました。共用試験は2017年2月から本格的に実施されます。
