論点は「those “authorities” pro-fessing to know」の部分。

「lots of dissention～」の前にコロンがあるから、

U.S. grammar is all sixes and sevens の「sixes and sevens」の言い換えで、

「U.S. grammar」=「lots of dissention～」っていう理解で合ってるだろう。

「to know」の解釈は２通りしかない。

①those “authorities”にかかる不定詞

②pro-fessing の目的語としての不定詞

those “authorities”のthoseが指すのは、「Scour the “rules”」の「the “rules”」で合ってるはず。

「pro-fessing to be known」じゃなくて、「pro-fessing to know」なんだよね。

①だと解釈すると、“authorities”to know（知っておくべき権威？）が、pro-fessingしているとなる。

professは一応自動詞として使えるみたいだけど、どうも意味不明だ。

②だと解釈すると、knowの目的語がないからやっぱり意味不明。

knowが自動詞だとしても、意味が理解できない。

ちょっとさすがにお手上げだ。

「pro-fessing」を名詞と解釈すればいい？

those “authorities”の言い換え？

名詞だと解釈すると、to knowとすっきり連結すると思えるけど。
