Well-informed people can be trusted with self-government

The ability of people to govern themselves was a major goal of education in Jefferson's mind. The new Federal Constitution of the United States "and a submission to it" proved to Jefferson that "whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own government; that whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them to rights."
