Hype vs. Reality at the MIT Media Lab (The Chronicle of Higher Education)
As research lead, Babakinejad felt it was his responsibility to raise these issues with Harper and other members of the team, and he did so in an email. He also raised his concerns with Ito. In an email, he told the director that the Open Agriculture Initiative had not been able to create a controlled environment in the food computers, and that the devices had been sent to schools and a refugee camp without being tested to ensure that they worked. He worried that Harper was misleading funders. Ito responded by asking if he could raise these issues with Harper. Babakinejad agreed to let Ito share his general concerns. (Ito did not respond to a request for comment. A Media Lab spokeswoman declined to comment.)
Harper's optimism helps raise money, and without money he won’t be able to see this dream of an international network of food computers come true. His critics, he said, “are basically jealous because I raise a lot of funding while giving away knowledge for free.” Harper also said that he doesn’t mislead the public. He’s explained his progress in great detail in a series of Medium posts, he said. Some may have misinterpreted his vision as current reality, he said, but if they listened closely they would not be mistaken. “Can you email a tomato to someone today? No,” he said. “Did I say that in my TED talk? Yes. Did I say it was today? No. I said, you will be able to email a tomato.”
It's true that Harper didn’t quite say that food computers can email tomatoes or apples, though you could be forgiven for thinking exactly that. He frequently leaves the impression that the project has achieved, or is on the brink of achieving, an enormous breakthrough. It’s a style that has attracted the sort of high-profile attention, not to mention corporate funding, that fuels projects at the MIT Media Lab, and his willingness to showcase food computers beset with problems feels consistent with Ito’s “deploy or die” philosophy.
M.I.T. Media Lab, Already Rattled by the Epstein Scandal, Has a New Worry (The New York Times)
“You seem to think endlessly reiterating untrue claims will lend them credibility, but it won’t,” Dr. Babakinejad wrote to Mr. Harper. “By persisting in this course of action, you have been putting M.I.T. and everyone associated with you at risk and I think it’s time that you were made to face up to that and take responsibility for it.”
The food computers, which researchers have envisioned selling to the public, are supposed to provide plants with just the right amount of light. But when the light function was not working, another member of the OpenAg team said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive events, an engineer manually rigged the device so that light would shine at the correct level during an important demonstration.
In an email exchange with Mr. Ito, Dr. Babakinejad expressed his concern about what he said were Mr. Harper’s false claims in a draft of the academic paper, the “60 Minutes” interview and lectures.
“Up to now,” Dr. Babakinejad wrote, “we have not been able to achieve a ‘controlled environment’ nor been able to create an atmosphere (Climate control) as he leads people to believe in his talks. His claims about developments such as implementations of image processing, microbiome dosing, creating different climates and collecting credible data from bots across the world are not true.”
Mr. Ito wrote in his reply: “Can I say that you have concerns about whether the food computers have been able to create a controlled environment which would put into questions some of the claims we make about the data and outcomes?”
Dr. Babakinejad replied in the affirmative, and the exchange ended.

A meeting with Jeffrey Epstein led to a gift -- and, now regrets (The Boston Globe)
The MIT Media Lab’s schedule was cleared on a Saturday afternoon in October 2015. There was a special guest and potential donor visiting then-director Joi Ito’s office.
One by one, some of the highest profile professors at the Media Lab trooped in and presented their research, answered questions, and discussed their work with the prospective benefactor: Jeffrey Epstein.
She discussed her research on how art, science, engineering, and design work together and brought small-scale models of her sculptures. Ito and another senior MIT professor were also present.
The day was a success: Oxman’s lab, Mediated Matter, received $125,000 tied to Epstein over the years. And because MIT did not want the disgraced financier to use the gift to help rehabilitate his reputation, Oxman was told it would be kept confidential.
“This is the first and only time I met Epstein,” Oxman said in a statement. “Joi assured me that Epstein was an approved donor who wished to devote his fortune to science and technology, in part to make amends for wrongs he committed earlier in his life.”
After the meeting, Oxman told the Globe, Ito twice asked her to write notes thanking Epstein for his contributions. She, along with other professors, were invited to dine with Epstein on several occasions, though she said she never attended. And in 2017, Ito requested that her design lab, which often produced donor gifts for the university, send a token of appreciation to Epstein: . . . She complied, and asked lab members to mail it to Epstein’s Manhattan address.
But she also told the graduate student “do not worry, we are *not* sponsored by him, per my direction,” according to the e-mail.

Reid Hoffman apologizes for role in Epstein-linked donations to MIT
My few interactions with Jeffrey Epstein came at the request of Joi Ito, for the purposes of fundraising for the MIT Media Lab. Prior to these interactions, I was told by Joi that Epstein had cleared the MIT vetting process, which was the basis for my participation. My last interaction with Epstein was in 2015. Still, by agreeing to participate in any fundraising activity where Epstein was present, I helped to repair his reputation and perpetuate injustice. For this, I am deeply regretful.
MIT Media Lab founder defends embattled director's decision to accept money from Jeffrey Epstein (The Boston Globe)
In an e-mail to the Globe sent after the meeting, Negroponte said he told Ito that “he should” take Epstein’s contribution, and “I would say that again based on what we knew at the time. . . . “Epstein is an extreme case. But then do you take Koch money? Do you take Huawei money? And on and on?” Negroponte said.
I had known of Joi’s contact with Epstein since about the beginning. He had reached out to me to discuss it. We are friends (Joi and I), and he knew I would be upset by his working with a pedophile.
Joi believed that he did not. He believed Epstein was terrified after the prosecution in 2011. He believed he had come to recognize that he would lose everything. He believed that whatever else he was, he was brilliant enough to understand the devastation to him of losing everything. He believed that he was a criminal who had stopped his crime. And nothing in his experience with Epstein contradicted this belief.
IF you are going to take type 3 money, then you should only take it anonymously. . . . Good for them, for here, too, transparency would be evil.
Sure, it wasn’t blood money, and sure, because anonymous, the gift wasn’t used to burnish Epstein’s reputation.
I know that Farrow’s article is crafted to draw the following sentence into doubt: Everything Joi did in accepting Epstein’s money he did with MIT’s approval. I trust the MIT review will confirm it (yes, I remain exactly that naive). So why is he resigning, rather than others in the administration?
And if Ito must go because Epstein’s wealth was accepted anonymously, who else should go because of blood money accepted openly? Will the planet have an equal advocate who demands justice for the Koch money? Or the victims of opioid abuse for the Sackler money?
So put the parts together: The MediaLab accepted an anonymous contribution from Epstein through the help and direction of Joi. The Lab did not (as “Professor Anonymous” wrote to me, his outrage apparently blinding him to irony) “help reputation-launder a convicted sex offender.” It would have, had it not be anonymous; but that’s the point about it being anonymous.
Peter Cohen, a former director of development and strategy, said in a statement that when he joined the Media Lab in 2014, it already had established procedures for handling Epstein’s contributions. Cohen said he understood that those policies were “authorized by and implemented with the full knowledge of MIT central administration.”

Letter regarding preliminary fact-finding about MIT and Jeffrey Epstein(不正資金に対する調査の途中経過報告)
Second, it is now clear that senior members of the administration were aware of gifts the Media Lab received between 2013 and 2017 from Jeffrey Epstein’s foundations. Goodwin Procter has found that in 2013, when members of my senior team learned that the Media Lab had received the first of the Epstein gifts, they reached out to speak with Joi Ito. He asked for permission to retain this initial gift, and members of my senior team allowed it. They knew in general terms about Epstein’s history – that he had been convicted and had served a sentence and that Joi believed that he had stopped his criminal behavior. They accepted Joi’s assessment of the situation. Of course they did not know what we all know about Epstein now.
Joi sought the gifts for general research purposes, such as supporting lab scientists and buying equipment. Because the members of my team involved believed it was important that Epstein not use gifts to MIT for publicity or to enhance his own reputation, they asked Joi to agree to make clear to Epstein that he could not put his name on them publicly. These guidelines were provided to and apparently followed by the Media Lab.
Information shared with us last night also indicates that Epstein gifts were discussed at at least one of MIT’s regular senior team meetings, and I was present.
I am aware that we could and should have asked more questions about Jeffrey Epstein and about his interactions with Joi. We did not see through the limited facts we had, and we did not take time to understand the gravity of Epstein’s offenses or the harm to his young victims. I take responsibility for those errors.

How an Elite University Research Center Concealed Its Relationship with Jeffrey Epstein (The New Yorker)
Dozens of pages of e-mails and other documents obtained by The New Yorker reveal that, although Epstein was listed as “disqualified” in M.I.T.’s official donor database, the Media Lab continued to accept gifts from him, consulted him about the use of the funds, and, by marking his contributions as anonymous, avoided disclosing their full extent, both publicly and within the university.

But near the end, one of Mr. Ito’s staunchest supporters, Nicholas Negroponte, a founder of the media lab, said he had told Mr. Ito to take the money and would do it again.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center denounced BTS, an internationally popular Korean band whose live performance on Japan TV was cancelled.
“Wearing a T-shirt in Japan mocking the victims of the Nagasaki A-bomb, is just the latest incident of this band mocking the past,” charged Rabbi Abraham Cooper. Associate Dean and Director of Global Social Action of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a leading Jewish Human Rights NGO.
Members of the band posed for a photo shoot wearing hats with the Nazi SS Death Head logo. The SS was a key component of the Nazi mass murder of 6 million Jews during the WWII Holocaust. “Flags appearing on stage at their concert were eerily similar to the Nazi Swastika. It goes without saying that this group, which was invited to speak at the UN, owes the people of Japan and the victims of the Nazism an apology.”
“But that is not enough. It is clear that those designing and promoting this group’s career are too comfortable with denigrating the memory of the past. The result is that on young generations in Korea and around the world are more likely to identify bigotry and intolerance as being ‘cool’ and help erase the lessons of history. The management of this group, not only the front performers, should publicly apologize,” Rabbi Cooper added.

EOS committee(Stortingets kontrollutvalg for etterretnings-, overvåkings- og sikkerhetstjeneste)は国会に任命される独立組織で、国の諜報活動、警察活動のすべてにアクセスできるということです。
Woho. Anglers are allowed two salmon per day with a minimum size for Chinook at 24 inches or larger. Salmon seasons from May 2016 to April 30, 2017 are currently being developed.
Last weekend Prowler Charters here in Bandon took clients out bottomfishing. Fishing for rockfish was excellent, but very few ling cod were taken. Strong ocean currents made for a fast drift which makes the conditions tough. Wayne Butler, the captain of the Miss Chief, told me that the depth at the Bandon bar was much deeper than last year. This winter's large rain event naturally flushed out the entrance, which makes bar crossings much safer. Anglers surf fishing out at Bullards Beach State Park reported good pinkfin surf perch action last week. Live sand shrimp or Berkley Gulp sand worms in camo colors have been working best. Perch fishing has been good up on the beaches in Coos Bay. Anglers are also catching pinkfin and striped perch along the Coos Bay south jetty. Boaters are catching rockfish inside the bay near the No. 7 buoy and the train trestle bridge
But while pundits have occasionally contorted themselves into logical pretzels to explain away Ford’s casual racism and misogyny — “He was just drunk!” “He always fights for the little guy!” — none has ever been able to explain away his deliberate and calculated anti-LGBT statements and actions.
Ford never hid anti-LGBT animus. From his earliest days on council, when he opposed funding small grants to diversity and AIDS-prevention campaigns, he made it explicit that his opposition stemmed from disgust with LGBT people, not from a desire to protect the public purse.
he astonishments of the quasi-Biblical clashes and catastrophes in the director Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” left me impatient to see his “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” The earlier film conveyed an awed and even terrified sense of the colossal, a delight in the cinematic ability to realize wrenching destruction and, at the same time, to shiver at the very imagination of it. Snyder turned the superhero universe around on itself, constructing backstories and out-there stories of an apocalyptic force; it was silly but potent, shallow but thrilling. Perhaps Snyder’s new film is the victim of great (or any) expectations, but “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” remains literally Earth-bound, and this fair planet is where Snyder bumps up against the limits of his vision.
Where “Man of Steel” opens big, with an intergalactic origin story that has the heightened tone of pseudo-scripture, the first big set piece in “Batman v Superman” is a catastrophe from home, a virtual replay of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, with Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) looking on with horror and hatred as the tower of Wayne Industries collapses (vertically) into a blinding gust of light-gray powder—as a result of the battle waged by Superman (Henry Cavill) against the Kryptonian usurper General Zod.

That start gives off a strange whiff of competition with—or emulation of—Marvel’s irrepressibly successful “Avengers” films, the first of which, in particular, is an unabashed post-9/11 allegory. (The connection is surprisingly direct. One of the climactic moments of “Batman v Superman”—a leap from the ground that vaults through the atmosphere and into outer space—is a virtual duplication, both dramatically and visually, of a similar climactic feat in “The Avengers.”) In Snyder’s new film, Superman appears, from the start, as a hopeless naïf, a battler for good who doesn’t admit to his own capacity to do incidental evil, a blinkered warrior who deploys his nearly infinite powers according to his unquestioned moral intuition rather than to the prudent calculation of results.

Relatives and friends of the 150 passengers and crew on Germanwings Flight 4U 9525 are due to go to the crash site high in the French Alps.
Lufthansa will operate two special flights - one from Barcelona and one from Duesseldorf - to Marseille, and both groups will travel on by road.
Reports say one of the two pilots on the doomed flight had left the cockpit and had been unable to get back in just before the crash on Tuesday.
There were no survivors, officials say.
They say the Airbus 320 from Barcelona to Duesseldorf hit a mountain after a rapid eight-minute descent.
Germanwings chief Thomas Winkelmann said 72 passengers were German citizens, including 16 pupils returning from an exchange trip.
Spain's government said 51 of the dead were Spanish.
Other victims were from Australia, Argentina, Britain, Iran, Venezuela, the US, the Netherlands, Colombia, Mexico, Japan, Denmark and Israel.
Germanwings is a low-cost airline owned by Germany's main carrier Lufthansa.
Cockpit mystery
Families and friends of the victims are expected to arrive at the crash site at Meolans-Revels later on Thursday.
Separately, a bus carrying 14 relatives of Spanish victims left Barcelona on Wednesday for the crash area, because they did not want to fly.
In France, special teams have been prepared to assist the families during their visit.
On Wednesday, French officials said usable data had been extracted from the cockpit voice recorder of the Germanwings plane.
Remi Jouty, the director of the French aviation investigative agency, said there were sounds and voices on the cockpit voice recorder but that it was too early to draw any conclusions.
He said he hoped investigators would have the "first rough ideas in a matter of days" but that the full analysis could take weeks or even months.
But the New York Times quoted an unnamed investigator as saying that one of the pilots had left the cockpit and had been unable to get back in.
"You can hear he is trying to smash the door down," the investigator adds, describing audio from the recorder.
A source close to the investigation told a similar story to the AFP news agency.
There had been earlier reports that the second black box - the flight data recorder - had been found. But Mr Jouty said this was not the case.
'Flying to the end'
Mr Jouty said the plane's last communication was a routine one with air traffic control.
The plane confirmed instructions to continue on its planned flight path but then began its descent a minute later.
Mr Jouty said controllers observed the plane beginning to descend and tried to get back in contact with the pilots but without success.
He ruled out an explosion, saying: "The plane was flying right to the end."

Gowers
しかし、同社の Director of global academic relations の Nick Fowler は、
Public Library of Science (PLoS)
http://jp.techcrunch.com/archives/20100527palm-loses-their-lead-webos-designer-to-the-google-android-team-others-may-follow/
Google has confirmed to AllThingsD that Matias is joining them as the Android team’s User Experience Director.
2.2.15: <rights> </rights>
http://lost_and_found.lv9.org/opf/opf_2.0_final_spec_ja.html
(c) Tsugumi Ohba (c) Takeshi Obara
>WORKING!!

Hi Peter,
Great idea and I love your quote about sharing.
Funnily enough I have been searching free tools today and here are a few goodies I am happy to share with you and the group.
1. http://www.keotag.com/ - searches tags on blogs and social bookmarking sites. (been having plenty of fun with this one and it's seems v. useful).
2. http://boardtracker.com/ - Searches posts on bullitin boards / forums for mentions of keywords / brand terms.
3. http://www.trendrr.com/ - enables you to track trends and provides some very valuable competitive analysis functionality.
4. http://usernamecheck.com/ This tool is essential for brand name protection. It lets you search a wide range of social sites to see if anyone is using your brand term / name as their profile ID. If they are not then I would suggest you register your brand / business name even if you do not plan to use the site to protect your business from damage. If your name is taken and not being used the chances are it is being squatted by a chancer. I had this issue on twitter with my social site for business people marzar.com but the nice folks at twitter reverted the name to me as the trade mark owner as soon as I contacted them in regards to the issue.
5. http://hellotxt.com update your status from one place across multiple social sites.
6. http://www.twilert.com/ Seems to be a number of tools to monitor twitter but this one seems to be pretty useful. Twilert is a Twitter application that lets you receive regular email updates of tweets containing your brand, product, service, well any keyword you like really.
7. http://www.backtype.com/ Monitors comments left on blog posts monitoring posts for sentiment may not be enough and issues and or insights often come from the comments posted by readers.
8. http://socialmention.com/ Again allows you to search blog posts, comments, news, events, images, bookmarks, microblogs and video all at once or on their own. This is a very useful tool and when I searched on my brand terms it came back with results that the other tools did not pick up on. In particular I found the bookmark search to be of value.
9. http://www.samepoint.com conversation search engine again came back with differing results to the other tools listed above.
10. http://www.marzar.com free to use business networing platform. Many members are involved with online marketing and or are senior business people. The audience is similar to Linkedin but the functionality differs. I built this site and I am working hard towards the next release of our platform now that we are funded.
Hope that this list posted publicly to the group helps others :)
Regards,
John

OK been a month but all of our posts (me included) and no one has shared more resources so here goes
