■1からやりたい症候群がめんどくさい

最初に素朴に思っただけなんだ「最初からちゃんとやった方が楽しめる」って

だから作品を楽しむ際に「最初から順番に楽しみたい」と思うようになった。

だってそうだろ？最初から読めばちゃんと文脈が理解できる当たり前の話だ

ゲームのシリーズものなら1からやりたい

メディアミックス作品だったらまず原作から触れたい

スピンオフ作品だったらまず本編の作品を見てみたい

このくっそくだらねぇこだわりのせいで人生の3割を損してきた

シリーズものを1からやるのが面倒でドラクエもFFも触ったことがない

ガンダムだって当然見てないし銀河英雄伝説も読んだことがないしFate シリーズも触ったことがねぇ(Fateに至っては何が“原作”なのかも分かんねぇ)、東方もアイマスもやったことねぇアイマスなんて最初アーケードゲームスタートだって知った時点でやる気を無くした。（“最初”からできないからだ）我ながら病的だ。

リリカルなのはも見てねぇあの作品はとらいあんぐるハート3 〜Sweet Songs Forever〜のスピンアウトだろ？当然とらいあんぐるハート3 から…

3!?3だって!!!?????それじゃ当然1作品目のとらいあんぐるハートからやらねぇとなぁ！？

Communicating underwater is challenging.

Light and odors don't travel well, so it's hard for animals to see or smell.

But sound moves about four times faster in water than in air, so in this dark environment, marine mammals often rely on vocalization to communicate.

That's why a chorus of sounds fills the ocean.

Clicks, pulses, whistles, groans, boings, cries, and trills, to name a few.

But the most famous parts of this underwater symphony are the evocative melodies, or songs, composed by the world's largest mammals, whales.

Whale songs are one of the most sophisticated communication systems in the animal kingdom.

Only a few species are known to sing.

Blue, fin, bowhead minke whales, and of course humpback whales.

These are all baleen whales which use hairy baleen plates instead of teeth to trap their prey.

Meanwhile, toothed whales do use echolocation, and they and other species of baleen whales make social sounds, such as cries and whistles, to communicate.

But those vocalizations lack the complexity of songs.

So how do they do it?

Land mammals like us generate sound by moving air over our vocal chords when we exhale, causing them to vibrate.

Baleen whales have a U-shaped fold of tissue between their lungs and their large inflatable organs called laryngeal sacs.

We don't know this for sure because it's essentially impossible to observe the internal organs of a living, singing whale, but we think that when a whale sings, muscular contractions in the throat and chest move air from the lungs across the U-fold and into the laryngeal sacs, causing the U-fold to vibrate.

The resulting sound resonates in the sacs like a choir singing in a cathedral making songs loud enough to propagate up to thousands of kilometers away.

Whales don't have to exhale to sing.

Instead, the air is recycled back into the lungs, creating sound once more.

One reason whale songs are so fascinating is their pattern.

Units, like moans, cries, and chirps are arranged in phrases.

Repeated phrases are assembled into themes.

Multiple themes repeated in a predictable pattern create a song.

This hierarchical structure is a kind of grammar.

Whale songs are extremely variable in duration, and whales can repeat them over and over.

In one recorded session, a humpback whale sang for 22 hours.

And why do they do it?

We don't yet know the exact purpose, but we can speculate.

Given that the singers are males and they mostly sing during the mating season, songs might be used to attract females.

Or perhaps they're territorial, used to deter other males.

Whales return to the same feeding and breeding grounds annually, and each discrete population has a different song.

Songs evolve over time as units or phrases are added, changed, or dropped.

And when males from different populations are feeding within earshot, phrases are often exchanged, maybe because new songs make them more attractive to breeding females.

This is one of the fastest examples of cultural transmission, where learned behaviors are passed between unrelated individuals of the same species.

We can eavesdrop on these songs using underwater microphones called hydrophones.

These help us track species when sightings or genetic samples are rare.

For example, scientists have been able to differentiate the elusive blue whale's populations worldwide based on their songs.

But the oceans are getting noisier as a result of human activity.

Boating, military sonar, underwater construction, and seismic surveys for oil are occurring more often which may interfere with whale's communication.

Some whales will avoid key feeding or breeding grounds if human noise is too loud.

And humpback whales have been observed to reduce their singing in response to noise 200 kilometers away.

Limiting human activity along migratory routes and in other critical habitats, and reducing noise pollution throughout the ocean would help ensure whales continued survival.

If the whales can keep singing and we can keep listening, maybe one day we'll truly understand what they're saying.

■Q;indiviを聴く

2010年の『Happy Celebration』以降、しばらく音沙汰なかったので、

もう自然消滅してしまったものと思っていたら、

一昨年の2013年に『Celebration Ghibli Songs and More Plus』を発表、

今年2015年は『Princess Celebration』が出たかと思うと、

続いて今週には、2009年の『Winter Celebration』以来の、

ウィンターアルバム『Winter Classics』が発売されるらしい。

ひさしぶりにQ;indiviのアルバムとして『Princess Celebration』を

聴いてみたが、Rin Oikawaの透明感のある美しい歌声は健在だった。

ファンとしては、Q;indiviの精力的な活動うれしいかぎりだ。

アマゾン限定で『Premium Celebration』なる新譜が出るらしいが、

いわゆるベスト盤のような曲セレクトなので、

Q;indiviをはじめて聴く人にはおすすめできるが、

逆に言うと、いつもの焼き直し商法である。

なんのアナウンスもなかったようだが、ツタヤ限定で

『Celebration ～special program～』というアルバムも、

出ていたようだが、これも似たようなベスト盤である。

あまりにもよく聴いて、あきあきしてきたものだから、

最近は、1.1倍速でキーを二つあげて聴いている。

ヴォーカルの限界に挑戦させている感じだが、

さらにアップテンポでキレが増して新鮮に聞こえる。

■今NHKのSONGSでゲスの極み乙女 特集をやってるわけだが

結成秘話を語る際に、もともと彼らが所属していたバンドのことがバッサリと捨象されていた。

ボーカルの絵音と休日課長はインディゴラエンド。いこかはマイクロコズム。

ちゃんまりはしらねーが、彼らの生い立ちをバッサリきっちゃったんだよ。

これはやっちゃいけねーと思うと同時に、悲しくなった。彼らのこの番組への構成への認識に、悲しくなった。

ゲスの極み乙女というコンセプトはこの21世紀も十数年が経過したこのJPOPの地平に本当に当意即妙に馴染んだ。

馴染んだ。馴染んだんだ。それはいいのだが、それまでには曲折が絶対にあって、それがインディゴラエンドでありマイクロコズムであり、そこで彼らが演出していたキャラクターなりイメージなりだったはずだ。その積み重ねの先にゲスに極み乙女があったはずだ。なのに、それはもう捨て去ってしまって、いまNHKでSONGSをやっている。それが悲しい。ことさらに悲しい。

公平を期すために（？）、私の年齢を書いておくと今年30になる。ゲスの極み乙女に注目するにはいささか年を取り過ぎている。でも彼らがそれぞれ元いた環境でやっていたことが、面白い具合にコラボレーションしてキラーボールという曲が生まれて、それを聴いた時、私はそれに感動したのだ。平成の初めくらいからバンドを聴いてヒットチャートを追って、インディーズにそれなりにそれなりに目を向けて年を取ってきた私が面白いと思ったのだ。それはとっても嬉しいことだった。

それが今見たら、その歴史性というか時の経過がばっさり捨象されてしまい、そこには「今」しかなくボーカルの絵音が何か知らんが若い人に何か言っていた。これほど空虚なことはない。彼らはそうした過去を塗りつぶしてゲスの極み多めというスタイルを表出しているが葛藤は無いのだろうか。いや絶対にあるのだろうが、それを乗り越える選択をしたからこのようにNHKで振る舞っているわけだ。蓋をして頑張って、若い人になんか言ってるわけだ。もちろんこの選択に是非を問いたいわけではない。ただこの様態が悲しい。ただそれだけだ。

■How Applejack Won the war 全訳及び全解説

前説

　本稿はTVアニメ『マイ・リトル・ポニー　〜トモダチは魔法〜』の二次創作作品「How Applejack Won the war」についての解説である。

今回扱う動画

～How Applejack Won the War～　完成版 ‐ ニコニコ動画:GINZA

　すでに動画up主による訳詞がついているため、これだけ観ても楽しめる。

　しかし元動画作者の Sherclop Pones の特徴として「偏執的なまでに韻を踏む」の他に「やたらダブルミーニングを込めたがる」というのもあり、翻訳動画だけではカバーしきれない、あるいは観ててわかりにくいところが多々存在する。

　以下ではそうしたスキマを解説していきたい。訳はだいたいオリジナルであるが、ところどころでリンク先動画主のGED氏の訳を大いに参考にさせてもらった。この場を借りて謝意を表したい。

三段目(Come on Johnny get your gun)の元ネタは当然反戦小説『ジョニーは戦場へ行った』（さらにその元ネタとなった軍歌『オーヴァー・ゼア』）。

四段目の「訓練所」は fruit camp 、新兵訓練所である Boot camp (昔流行ったアレ)とかけてある。

三段目:　i’m speaking fancy too.　は第二シーズン六話「恐怖のキューティー・マーク」より。フランス語のキューティーマークが発現したアップルブルームに対してアップルジャックが言ったセリフ。日本語版放送時には「妹がザマス言葉になっちゃった！」と訳された。なぜこのセリフが引用されたかといえば、前段の歌詞 Rendez-vous が「集結地点」を表すフランス語だから。

四段目: Agent Orange? エージェント・オレンジはベトナム戦争時に、森林ゲリラに悩まされたアメリカ軍が木々を根こそぎ除去するためにばら撒いた悪名高き除草剤。含有されていた有害物質が後々までベトナムの人びとに深刻な影響を与えた。

五段目: Raze the field, raise this barn. - 第三シーズン八話「Apple Family Reunion」の劇中歌より。原曲の raise（建物を建てる）と、 raze（破壊する）をかけている。

五段目: do-si-do とはスクウェアダンスやポルカの基本ステップ。元はフランス語。

一段目: Draft horse そのまま訳せば「徴募(Draft)された馬」だが、同時にアメリカのばん馬にあたるゴツいお馬さん(Draft horse)にもかかっている。

三段目: alpha, bravo, charley-horse アルファ、ブラボー、チャーリーは、軍隊で使用されるコールサイン。それに charley-horse すなわち「こむら返り」をかけている。

四段目、五段目: Family bonding, selling bonds, Signing treaties, singing songs 日本語訳動画うぷ主のGED氏は「一家団結、戦時公債、条約締結、軍歌斉唱」と訳している。名訳である。

三段目: Loyal to my apple corp　作曲者である Sherclop Pones の人気シリーズ動画「Friendship is Witchcraft」でアップルジャックとレインボーダッシュのエレメントが入れ替わってしまい、アップルジャックが「忠誠」のエレメントになってしまったことがあった。

■Apple Musicで村上春樹の勧めるジャズを聴こう

和田誠と村上春樹のジャズ名鑑『ポートレート・イン・ジャズ』で取り上げられているアルバムをApple Musicで探してみたところ、ほとんどのアルバムが見つかった。見つからなかったものは、アーティストページにリンクしてある。アルバム単位では見つからないものでも、アーティストページに移動すればわかる通りかなりの音源が聴ける。ジャズに限って言えばApple Music最強ではないだろうか。

いったいいつ誰が佐村河内守氏を「現代のベートーヴェン」として「世界で評価」されていると言い出したのか、Google検索でわかる範囲で調べ始めてみた。

Yabai?

ヤバいって？

Japanese slang for cool, dope, sick, ill. Fast, intense. What moves you. Yabai is yabai. There’s no other word to describe it.

Funky Kota is a new style of rave and house music from Indonesia. Over there they call it Dangdut, but it’s also contracted as Funkot. The beats

are hyper fast, usually around 180 to 200 BPM, like happy hardcore except with more vocal samples. “Are you ready!” “Hey DJ!” That kind of

stuff. Except to Japanese ears, it sounds like “TICCCKKEE!” It doesn’t mean anything but it gets you pumped up.

Kota bass lines and samples over J-pop, folk tunes and old super hero theme songs. Now he’s remixing our stuff. Very yabai.

So this is a new direction for the group? Your older songs are conservative as far as idol music go.

We were in before AKB48, playing free shows in Akihabara and making a name for ourselves. The current idol culture didn’t exist back in 2006.

AKB48’s rise to fame set the standard for all other acts to follow. They made idols yabai. Now you need to have a hook to stand out from the

crowd.

No, unlike some other groups we don’t do the bathing suit thing anymore! We want to keep our act more pure, more genuine.

Have you changed over the years?

Seriously? We hope the video shows people how yabai Japan is. See, the Japanese take on Funkot is different from Indonesia, so the origin ators

are starting to reverse-import it. Even the way we dance isn’t authentic. It’s half cobbled together from YouTube clips, half improv.

本当に？　あのPVを見て、日本がいかにヤバいところか知ってほしいですね。日本のFunkotは、インドネシアのとは違ってると思うんだけど、最近は本家のそっちの方に、逆輸入され始めてるそうなんです。うちらはダンスも本場とは違ってるんだけど、あれって急いでyoutubeのクリップから作ったのと改良したのが半々なんです。

Day Three: In Tokyo for Yoko Kanno Concert
The show @ Saitama Super Arena was absolutely incredible...3 hours long! It was a real mix of J-pop, symphonic, musician's music (jazz-rock, funk, etc) and beautiful ballads. I sang The Garden Of Everything duet w/ Maya Sakamoto - @ rehearsals I was having a rough time memorizing the crazy words (even more trippy than Hendrix or Lennon) but in the end I nailed it. When I did "Could You Bite The Hand" the crowd went nuts clapping in time throughout the song, just my acoustic guitar and 17,000 people! It was the biggest crowd I've ever "fronted" before - what a rush man. When I got to Call Me, Call Me they were like putty in my hands. Later in the show I came back and did a killer version of Rain as a duet w/ Mai Yamane. It was really good to see everyone again....I only wish we could do this more often.
Day Two: In Tokyo for Yoko Kanno Concert
The 1st rehearsal was a trip, lots of staging, etc. The first time I appear onstage I perform 3 songs in a row starting with a duet w/ Maya Sakamoto "The Garden Of Everything". We start out on opposite ends of a long stage and move toward each other by the end. As I reach the other side of the stage with my wireless microphone, an acoustic guitar and mic stand rise up from out of the floor, I strap on the guitar and do "Could You Bite The Hand?" - When I'm done I set the guitar back down, it disappears into the floor with the mic stand and I finish with "Call Me, Call Me" backed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. Pretty Awesome. Later in the show I come back for a duet of "Rain" with Mai Yamane and back her up on "Gonna Knock A Little Harder". It's gonna be an amazing show!
Day One: In Tokyo for Yoko Kanno Concert
Happy July 4th! I am just now waking up in Tokyo. On the plane there were many people wearing surgical masks and constantly washing with Purell. It was a 12 hour flight so I slept a bit, worked on learning the words for Yoko's concert that I'm singing on here and watched some movies/tv. Typical boring flight. When I got in to Narita airport my contact, Cherry met me and took me to where I"m staying - Hotel Sunroute Plaza in Shinjuku section of Tokyo. After I cleaned up we went out for something to eat and although I had my heart set on sushi she took me to a place called Momma's - a homestyle Japanese place that serves little dishes of different stuff, like their version of tapas. Anyway, I did have some octopus sashimi...but also uni flavored tofu, raw scallop and a strange salad with lettuce, red pepper raw tuna & octopus, raisins, cashews & cheese. When I got back to the hotel and passed out right after. I just awoke to white skies and bizzare shaped buildings outside my window. Now I'm off to have an equally adventurous breakfast...
