ずるずる遅れることはあっても、予定時刻通りに中継地点に着くことはめったにない。

上の文は『夜のピクニック』にある、いたって普通の文章だが、まったく英訳できない。

「ずるずる遅れることがあること」と「予定時刻通りに中継地点に着くことはめったにないこと」は対比になっておらず、文を接続できる言葉が英語にない。

英語で対比として書くとしたら、「ずるずる遅れることはあっても、予定通りに中継地点に着く」だ。

1. even ifで攻める
   • Even if there were delays, they hardly arrived on time.
   • 自然な文は"Even if there were delays, they often/eventually arrived on time."
2. whileで攻める
   • While there were delays, they hardly arrived on time.
   • 自然な文は"While there were delays, they often/eventually arrived on time."
3. butで攻める
   • There were often delays, but they hardly arrived on time
   • 自然な文は"There were often delays, but they mostly arrived on time."
4. (番外)Aもあれば、Bもある
   • "They might be late sometimes, but they're also sometimes on time."

タイトルは前件と後件で同じ事を繰り返している。

英語では"While John is shy, his wife is social."（ジョンが引っ込み思案であるのに対し, 夫人は愛想がいい）と書くところを、

"While John is shy, his wife is shy too."（ジョンが引っ込み思案であるのに対し、夫人も引っ込み思案だ）と書いているようなもんだ。

日本語バグってない？
