Evidence for a Collective Intelligence Factor in the Performance of Human Groups

Psychologists have repeatedly shown that a single statistical factor—often called “general intelligence”—emerges from the correlations among people’s performance on a wide variety of cognitive tasks. But no one has systematically examined whether a similar kind of “collective intelligence” exists for groups of people. In two studies with 699 people, working in groups of two to five, we find converging evidence of a general collective intelligence factor that explains a group’s performance on a wide variety of tasks. This “c factor” is not strongly correlated with the average or maximum individual intelligence of group members but is correlated with the average social sensitivity of group members, the equality in distribution of conversational turn-taking, and the proportion of females in the group.

Bullshit を『クソ食らえ』と翻訳されるのは自由ですが、それだと bullshit が本来持つ嘘、という意味合いが薄れるのではないでしょうか？『あんなの嘘っぱち』とか？あと

は大きく間違い。Roar は例えば戦いの前に兵隊が“うぉ〜”って雄叫びを上げるような、そんな動詞。Roar では笑いの要素は想像できません。『会場は勝利の雄叫びに湧いた』、ではちょっと大げさだから、『会場は湧いた』くらいでしょうか。
元ネタを見ると、Jobs は bullshit とは言っていなくて、Don’t be evil is a load of crap だそうです。だったら『「悪をなすな」は全く戯言だな』くらい。

そこそこ新規IPが立ち上がってんだなーって改めて実感できた。
日本はどうなんだろう？
標記のダールフール関連記事を読ませて頂きました。
きちんと過去ログを追ってはいませんが、ダールフール危機関連の記事を精力的に拾い上げていらっしゃることに敬服しています。事実、今回の記事を目にしなければ、私はご紹介されたNYTやFTの記事その他を読むことはなかったでしょう。
しかし、ご多忙のせいでしょうが、訳し急ぎのご様子がそこここに見られるように思われますし、それをもとにしたご論旨もいささか明瞭でない部分もあるように思われます。一読して感じた違和感を整理するため、増田からですみませんが、記事を起してみました。
まず、FT記事の「展望」の紹介の仕方にやや違和感があります。その部分（''What happens next ... in exchange for surrendering Mr Bashir''）を私が要約するなら、構造は以下のように取ります（重要と考えるところを＜ ＞で囲って強調します）。
イ．（逮捕状を出した結果、）何が起こるかははっきりしない。
ロ．最も楽観的なシナリオは、体制内プラグマティストが政変を起こし、和平交渉へ向かうこと。
ハ．しかし、ICCの法的決定の＜政治的帰結＞がそううまくいくとしたら奇跡。
ニ．＜第一の理由＞は、逮捕がすぐに実現しそうにないから。
ホ．＜第二の理由＞は、バシールが＜全てを統べる＞独裁者ではないから。つまり、正義が追求されるなら、体制内のバシール以外で責を負うべき者も起訴されねばならないから。
特段の予備知識のない私の単純な読みを述べますと、ここでFTは、楽観的なシナリオに釘をさしています。ICCの逮捕状は、国際的に正義を追求するというメッセージだが、その原則は、罪に関与した体制派をより広く射程におさめるものであるため、内部からの変革をためらわせるのではないか、ということです。つまり、はっきりと言いきってはいませんが、正義と和平を天秤にかけています。
一方、前回ご紹介のクリストフ記者によれば、両者はトレードオフの関係にはないとされます（''I think Graham is wrong that that's the trade-off, and I agree with Tutu that there won’t be peace until there is an element of justice.'' この部分の紹介はより原文に沿った形にしてもよいのではないかと思います）。彼は基本的にICCの決定を肯定的に見ているようです。
続く文章を読んだ限り、ブログ主様はFT寄りのように見えますが、このあたりを「微妙に異なっている」等々とぼやかす必要はあるのでしょうか。
また、この問題に関しては、国務大臣と民兵指導者それぞれ一名に対し、2007年4月の段階で、ICCから既に逮捕状が出ていることも留意されるべきではないかと思います。
次の論点、悲観的なシナリオ、スーダン南北の内戦再点火に移ります。「クリストフ記者の洞察が重要」とのことですが、どの部分かやや不明確なように思います。
彼は、包括的和平合意は既に著しく不安定となっているのであり、逮捕状がその流れを悪化させるとは見ていません。そして、南部は独立に向かっているが、石油資源喪失を阻止するため、北部は戦う（''fight''）だろう、と前回ご紹介の記事で述べています。その一方で、逮捕状は戦いを抑止する効果を持つだろうとも述べています（''there’s vast uncertainty about the CPA, but I don’t think there’s any reason to think that an arrest warrant for Bashir worsens the trajectory. Right now, the South is headed for independence in 2011, and the North will fight to prevent that because the South has oil. Frankly, an arrest warrant may make it less likely that Khartoum will fight (or make it less able to fight), perhaps averting a resumption in the north-south war.''）。つまり、南北の火種は非常に大きいが、逮捕状にはある程度の抑止効果があるという見解のようです。
文章を拝見した限り、ブログ主様は、「南北問題は再燃する可能性」を重視していらっしゃるように見えます。
この再燃を促すかもしれない逮捕状、その火種の大きさという前提に立って、ブログ主様は、その逮捕状を出した「ICCを支える諸国」の責任へと言及されています。そこの論旨には基本的に賛成なのですが、いくばくかの違和感を感じますので、述べてみます。
まず、FTの訳について、一文だけ、こなれているようには見えないので、不出来ですが拙訳を出します。
もしICCがこの件でへまをやり、スーダンが崩壊していくのを世界が傍観するようなことになったなら、水曜日の決定は、人権の勝利では全くなかったことになるというリスクがあるのです。
（''For if the ICC bungles this case, and the world stands by as Sudan crumbles, there is a risk that Wednesday’s decision will prove no triumph for human rights.''）
スーダンでは確かに人権が蹂躙されてきました。とはいえ、人権が完全に空文化することはないでしょうし、ICC加盟国＜だけ＞の責務でもないでしょう。
お示しの地図にあるように、スーダンはICC加盟国ではありません。それなのに、どうしてICCが逮捕状を発行したのでしょうか。それは、＜国連安保理＞がICCに付託したからです。つまり、今回の逮捕状の件について、「ICCを支える諸国」に安保理常任理事国が「含まれていない」とされることには賛同できません。
もちろん、「ICCを支える諸国」の責任の重さは言うまでもないでしょうし、「日本に問われている部分も大きいはずだ」という結論に異議はありません。
最後に、このような問題について紹介の労を取って下さったことに改めて感謝します。
